Focus on developing high-value fruit trees

QTO - In order to contribute to increasing the economic value per unit area, Trieu Phong commune has encouraged farmers to take advantage of inefficient land to convert to growing high-value crops, including fruit trees. This has helped people increase their income, improve their lives and promote sustainable development for local agriculture.

Converting crops appropriately and effectively

In order to effectively exploit the potential and advantages of the locality, the former Trieu Phong District Party Committee issued Resolution No. 02-NQ/HU, dated April 28, 2016 on building large fields, developing farms and ranches in the 2016-2020 period and Resolution No. 07-NQ/HU, dated November 12, 2021 "On socio-economic development of hilly areas in the 2021-2025 period, with a vision to 2030". With the participation of the entire political system, the resolutions have helped farmers in the area make a breakthrough in developing the hilly area's economy.

Previously, Mr. Nguyen Hoang Kim's family in Nhan Bieu area 3, Trieu Phong commune had 3 hectares of rubber trees, however, due to the storm, most of the trees were broken. After grasping the policy from Resolution No. 02-NQ/HU and the active propaganda, mobilization and guidance of the government, departments and organizations in the commune, in 2018, he decided to destroy half of the damaged rubber area and switch to growing fruit trees. To implement this model, he spent a lot of time and effort to learn about fruit trees suitable for the soil and climate of Trieu Phong hilly area; visited and learned about the experience of growing fruit trees in Nghe An province, old Cam Lo district...

With the advantage of a large pig, buffalo and cow breeding area, ensuring a source of fertilizer for organic crops, he is confident in implementing a comprehensive fruit tree model.

“At first, I planted about 150 Van Du orange trees, green-skinned grapefruit and Dien grapefruit on a trial basis. After 3 years, the harvest began. The fruits are of guaranteed quality, delicious, and favored by the market. After deducting the average cost, the fruit garden brings in a profit of about 35 million VND per year. In 2022, I will expand the area of fruit trees to 1.5 hectares, including: 130 green-skinned grapefruit trees, 20 Dien grapefruit trees, 130 Vinh orange trees, 110 Van Du orange trees, and intercropping with tangerines, wild sim, Taiwanese guava and bananas. Currently, the garden is growing well and is expected to be harvested in about 1 year. Along with the income from rubber trees (nearly 100 million VND/year), it is expected that the upcoming fruit garden will bring my family an additional stable income of about 100 million VND/year,” said Mr. Kim.

Implementing the policy of converting crops to improve ineffective mixed gardens and forests of the locality, more than 6 years ago, Mr. Bui Quang Huyen in Thuong Phuoc village also decided to invest in improving the soil, varieties, and planting 3 hectares of organic oranges. During the planting process, he applied microbial fertilizers, biological products, and appropriate pruning and canopy shaping techniques, so every year the garden bears fruit, large and even fruits, thin peel, juicy orange segments, and sweet taste. On average, each year, his family's orange output reaches about 45 tons, bringing in a revenue of 900 million VND, after deducting expenses, the profit reaches 300 million VND.

According to Mr. Huyen, growing oranges brings many times higher economic efficiency than growing crops, cassava... Therefore, his family focuses on caring for, maintaining and developing the orange garden to have a stable and sustainable source of income. Many people see his model is effective so they come to visit and learn from his experience, he is willing to share how to grow and care for fruit trees.

Effectiveness from the right policy

Resolution No. 02-NQ/HU and Resolution No. 07-NQ/HU of the old Trieu Phong District Party Committee set out the main goals of transforming the agricultural production model from small scale to larger and more concentrated scale. In particular, encouraging the development of fruit trees, medicinal plants, building multi-tree and multi-animal models; creating a breakthrough and rapid, sustainable development for the hilly area.

On that basis, the Party Committee, government, departments, branches and organizations in Trieu Phong commune have led and directed the development of local agricultural production resolutely, focusing on renovating mixed gardens, overcoming the situation of abandoned fields to build new crop and livestock models, bringing sustainable efficiency.

The Commune Farmers' Association actively propagates, mobilizes, and guides members and farmers to exploit the land advantages in fertile hilly areas to grow fruit trees; encourages the expansion of citrus growing areas, such as: green-skinned grapefruit, pomelo, Van Du orange, Xa Doai orange, Vinh orange; builds and develops agriculture in the direction of high technology, natural farming, and organic farming.

Currently, the entire Trieu Phong commune has more than 20 hectares of fruit trees, mainly concentrated in Thuong Phuoc village and Nhan Bieu area 3. Fruit trees grown in the commune include: green-skinned grapefruit, oranges, tangerines, guavas, etc. On average, each household grows a small area of 0.3-0.5 hectares, while a large household grows 1-3 hectares. Fruit tree farmers in Trieu Phong commune adhere to safe farming principles, so their products are always of guaranteed quality and are favored by consumers.

Thanks to that, the product output is favorable, mainly traders come to the garden to buy. After deducting investment costs, each hectare of fruit trees brings in an income of 130-160 million VND/crop. Along with other models of cultivation and livestock, income from growing fruit trees has contributed to helping Trieu Phong farmers have the conditions to eliminate hunger, reduce poverty sustainably, and become well-off and rich.

Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Trieu Phong Commune, Pham Van Dong, said: "Currently, the association continues to coordinate to promote the brand of clean agricultural products in the commune, including fruit trees in a wide and deep way, contributing to helping people have a more stable output for their products. At the same time, we continue to mobilize members to choose new, suitable and effective crops and livestock to develop the economy, contributing to the effective implementation of poverty reduction work and promoting socio-economic development in the locality."
