The victory of Sanae Takaichi, who is likely to become Japan's first female prime minister after becoming president of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), was a surprise but raised optimism that she will launch a campaign of monetary easing.

This sent the Nikkei 225 index soaring nearly 5% on October 5 and pushed the yen sharply lower, as investors began to question the Bank of Japan's (BoJ) ability to continue with its rate hikes.

On October 7, the Nikkei index continued its upward momentum with a 0.7% increase to 48,264.98 points in the late morning.

South Korean and Chinese stocks were closed for a holiday, while other Asian markets such as Singapore, Wellington, Manila and Jakarta all closed in the green.

Takaichi's victory removes uncertainty about Japan's policy direction, said Charu Chanana, an analyst at trading platform Saxo Markets. She said Takaichi's agenda is expected to continue to combine fiscal support and ultra-loose monetary policy.

For investors, that means there will be no sudden tightening of policy by the BoJ and continued coordination between the government and the BoJ.

Also helping to lift sentiment was the announcement of a partnership between semiconductor maker Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and OpenAI to develop Artificial Intelligence (AI) data centers. The deal comes after OpenAI and US chip giant Nvidia signed a deal worth more than $100 billion for equipment. OpenAI also reached agreements this week with South Korean semiconductor giants Samsung and SK Hynix for chips and other equipment to be used in its Stargate project.

The news further fueled traders' renewed interest in technology stocks, which have led global gains this year.

In the domestic market, at 11:45 a.m. on October 7, the VN-Index decreased by 0.63 points (0.04%) to 1,694.87 points. The HNX-Index decreased by 0.21 points (0.08%) to 274.48 points.
