(Dan Tri) - The US Court of Appeals approved the special prosecutor's request to suspend the prosecution of President-elect Donald Trump related to the mishandling of classified documents after leaving the White House.

According to AFP , after Donald Trump was re-elected last week, Special Prosecutor Jack Smith filed a petition with the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals on November 13, requesting a postponement of the prosecution of Trump until December 2. Special Prosecutor Smith said the suspension was to allow the government to "assess this unprecedented situation and determine the appropriate future course consistent with Department of Justice policy." The Department of Justice has long had a policy of not prosecuting a sitting president. Last week, a federal judge also granted Smith's request to halt the lawsuit against Trump for conspiring to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. Trump was re-elected in the context of facing a number of legal troubles, including a lawsuit related to a conspiracy to overturn the results of the 2020 election and mishandling of classified documents after leaving office in 2021. Trump was supposed to be sentenced in July, but his lawyers asked for the sentence to be overturned, arguing that a former president has immunity from criminal prosecution.
