FBI Director Announces Resignation, Trump Speaks Out

FBI Director Chris Wray announced on December 11 that he will resign early next year.

"In my view, this is the best way to avoid dragging the agency into further controversy, while also reinforcing the values ​​and principles that are so important to how we do our work," Mr. Wray told FBI employees about his resignation in a meeting, according to Reuters.

Mr. Wray announced his intention to resign after US President-elect Donald Trump signaled his intention to fire him and nominated former Chief of Staff to the Secretary of Defense Kash Patel as his replacement.

It was Mr. Trump, during his first term as president, who appointed Mr. Wray in 2017 for a 10-year term.

The resignation makes Mr. Wray the second consecutive FBI director to quit because of Mr. Trump. Mr. Trump fired Mr. Wray’s predecessor, James Comey, early in his first term. Mr. Comey was fired after he was dissatisfied with the FBI’s investigation into alleged ties between Mr. Trump’s 2016 campaign and Russia.

Mr. Trump and his hard-line allies have criticized Mr. Wray and the FBI in general after FBI agents conducted a court-approved search of Mr. Trump’s Florida resort in 2022 to recover classified documents he had withheld after leaving office.

That incident sparked one of two federal prosecutions Mr. Trump faces while out of office. Mr. Trump denies wrongdoing and describes all the cases against him as politically motivated.

Trump's Republican allies have joined him in accusing the FBI of becoming politicized, although there is no evidence that Democratic President Joe Biden interfered with the FBI's investigative processes, according to Reuters.

On the social network Truth Social, Mr. Trump called Mr. Wray's resignation "a great day for America." "This will end the weaponization of what has become known as the American Department of Injustice. I just don't know what happened to him," Mr. Trump wrote.
