Join the campaign to encourage students to return to school

The 2024-2025 school year has begun for more than a month, but many students are still frequently absent from school and drop out midway. Schools, authorities, and local organizations have joined together to mobilize and bring students back to class, a measure that has brought clear results. The story in Tra Tap commune is a typical example.

To each village, the roof is moving.

In the 2025-2026 school year, Nguyen Trai Secondary School for Ethnic Minorities (Tra Tap Commune) has 11 classes with 390 students. According to statistics, since the beginning of the school year, 37 students have been absent from school, accounting for 9.4%.

Most of the students are absent from school without permission or drop out midway due to difficult family circumstances, having to follow their parents to the fields, taking care of younger siblings, lack of transportation to school, difficult roads... Some students show signs of boredom with studying, poor academic performance, lack of motivation to continue studying. Students also drop out of school due to the influence of customs and practices and the lure of new social evils such as online games.

For over a month now, every week, Mr. Nguyen Thanh, Party Cell Secretary and Principal of Nguyen Trai Secondary School for Ethnic Minorities, has traveled with his colleagues on trails, over passes, and across streams to each village and each hamlet to encourage students to go to class.

“Most of the students at the school are Ca Dong and Xo Dang ethnic minorities, so we have to go to their homes, talk to their parents, and persuade them to return to class. The school also mobilized commune officials, the Women's Union, and the Youth Union to coordinate with teachers to persuade the students,” said Mr. Nguyen Thanh.

Ho Thi Nho, a 7/1 student living in Tak Pang hamlet (village 3, Tra Tap commune) is one of the cases at risk of dropping out of school. Nho's family is in particularly difficult circumstances. Recently, she has been absent from school frequently and intends to quit school to stay home and help her parents with the farm.

The homeroom teacher and school board have visited the house many times to persuade and convince the family to create conditions for Nho to continue going to school. However, due to poor living conditions and limited awareness, persuasion is still difficult. "Nhao's academic performance is not bad, but the difficult circumstances have discouraged him. We are trying to find support to help him have more motivation to go to school," said Mr. Nguyen Thanh.

Schools and authorities join forces

In order to effectively and deeply coordinate between the school and local forces in Tra Tap commune, Nguyen Trai Secondary School for Ethnic Minorities organized a thematic meeting to propagate and mobilize students to go to class.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the Party Committee, People's Committee, associations and organizations such as the Women's Union, Youth Union, Village Front and all teachers of the school. Here, the parties discussed and assessed the current situation of students dropping out of school and being absent from school in the locality, and at the same time proposed specific solutions suitable for each village and each village.

Teacher Nguyen Thanh shared: “The situation of students dropping out of school requires a coordinated response. The school cannot act alone but needs close coordination with parents, village chiefs, village secretaries and associations and unions.

Each force has its own strengths: homeroom teachers closely monitor each student; parent representatives create a bridge with families; village and hamlet officials directly mobilize at the grassroots level; commune departments and branches participate in staying close to villages and hamlets to work with the school to overcome difficulties.

Schools are responsible for helping students realize the importance of learning, creating consensus among parents and the community so that their children attend class regularly. Close coordination between teachers - parents - local authorities - organizations plays an important role in maintaining student numbers and improving the quality of comprehensive education .

Mr. Ha Ra Dieu, Party Secretary and Chairman of the People's Council of Tra Tap commune, emphasized: "Keeping students in school is not only the responsibility of the education sector, but also the common task of the entire political system and society. Today's students are the future of the village. Tra Tap commune commits to continue to accompany the school, teachers and parents in mobilizing and supporting students to attend class regularly, not leaving any child behind."

Mr. Ha Ra Dieu also suggested that the Party Cell and the School Board need to study and learn good practices from localities and schools with similar conditions, and apply them appropriately to the actual situation of their school.

Opinions at the meeting were unanimous that, in order to keep students coming to class, in addition to propaganda and mobilization, it is important to build a friendly and attractive learning environment.

Activities such as extracurricular activities, sports , community activities or thoughtful boarding organization not only help students feel comfortable and safe but also make them love going to school more.

Mr. Bui Van Chuyen, Head of the Parents' Association of Nguyen Trai Ethnic Boarding Secondary School, shared: "As parents, we understand the difficulties of families in the highlands. However, sending children to school is the only way for them to have a better future. The Parents' Association will actively coordinate with the school, promote in the community, and encourage families to send their children to class regularly."

Thanks to the synchronous and responsible participation of the school and the community, many students in Tra Tap have been persuaded to return to class, gradually stabilizing their study habits. These actions not only demonstrate the spirit of "all for the beloved students", but also contribute to maintaining the goal of improving people's knowledge, creating a premise for the Tra Tap highland region to develop in the future.
