Kroos' new life

Toni Kroos retired after EURO 2024 at the age of 34. But even though he left the pitch, his life still revolved around the ball.

Toni Kroos is still attached to football after retirement.

Not wanting to become a coach at the moment, Kroos still takes coaching courses from the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) to stay connected with the profession. From there, he developed the Toni Kroos Academy at Boadilla del Monte (Madrid), which trains children from 4 to 18 years old in a modern environment, oriented towards professionalism and performance.

Kroos conceived the idea for the academy during the pandemic, when he initiated the online challenge “Toni’s Home Challenge”, inviting fans to juggle the ball in his style. The unexpected success led him to open his first football camp in Cologne in 2022, and then officially launch the academy in Madrid in September 2024, a few months after retiring from the field.

Not stopping there, Kroos also founded the Icon League in Germany - a similar version of Gerard Pique's Kings League - with his younger brother Felix as club president, along with the participation of friends such as Antonio Rüdiger and David Alaba. In addition, the Toni Kroos Foundation, which he founded in 2015, is still active, supporting children with serious illnesses, helping them find joy in adversity.

After hanging up his boots, Kroos also entered the media industry with the podcast “Einfach mal Luppen” (roughly translated as “Just Break the Ball”), a show co-hosted by him and his brother. This is where the former German midfielder shares his candid views on contemporary football: criticizing the wave of money from Saudi Arabia, protesting the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and not afraid to “poke” Hansi Flick’s Barcelona.

“He is a man who loves discipline. At Real, they would laugh about it. Here, no one knows who arrived later – the player or the coach,” Kroos joked in one episode, adding that Barca’s adventurous attacking philosophy “could cost them if Pedri or Lamine have a bad day.”

Kroos is considered a Real Madrid legend.

Kroos has maintained his sharp style on social media. After Real Madrid’s 2-1 win over Valencia last season, he posted on X: “Too many cooks spoil the broth,” implying that the team was too aggressive but lacked ideas. Conversely, when congratulating PSG on their Champions League win, he wrote gently: “It’s great to see that football still belongs to team spirit and a great coach.”

Kroos and his family have now chosen to stay in Madrid - the city where they have spent a decade of their career. “When I first arrived, I thought I would return to Germany. We even built a house there. But over the years, we have grown to love this place more and more. Now that house is empty because Madrid is home,” he shared at the city government’s honor ceremony.

No longer the "conductor" of the Bernabeu stadium, Toni Kroos now plays a different song - where he continues to inspire, build a new generation, and still maintains the same calm, precise style as the passes that once made his brand.
