Saving the life of a baby boy with internal organs outside the abdomen

On May 22, information from Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital said that the hospital's doctors performed surgery to save the life of a premature baby boy with abdominal wall defects, internal organs located outside the body, and intestinal malformations.

Previously, the hospital received a premature baby boy (35 weeks old), underweight (2.4 kg), the child of mother TNQN (residing in Huong Khe district, Ha Tinh ) admitted in a state of abdominal wall opening, internal organs outside the abdomen, intestinal malformation. Mother N. said that during her pregnancy, she did not go for check-ups or ultrasounds.

The boy was saved.

The patient was admitted to the hospital with malnutrition, weakness, hypothermia, signs of dehydration, respiratory failure, and a poor prognosis. The abdominal wall defect caused the child's stomach, small intestine, and colon to protrude out of the abdominal cavity.

After 2 hours of intensive resuscitation, the doctors decided to perform surgery to suture the sterile bag for the child. 10 days later, the child's entire intestines were in the abdominal cavity, and the patient was scheduled for a second surgery to close the abdominal wall.

Doctors said that this was a special surgery because premature babies and low birth weight babies often have poor and incomplete organ functions (heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, etc.). Therefore, the pressure on the surgical team was very high, requiring a very high level of precision, especially with regard to anesthetics and intravenous fluids.

After surgery, the patient's postoperative recovery was extremely difficult. The child's condition continued to worsen, the surgical wound was tense due to the large intestine area, difficult to heal, and severe pneumonia.

After 2 months of intensive care and treatment, the patient has recovered well, has a clear digestive tract, is in stable condition and has just been discharged from the hospital.
