The patient was brought to the Emergency Department at 4:20 p.m. the same day, with a crushed right popliteal region after a work accident on a fishing boat in the morning.
After first aid for the patient with painkillers, anti-infection with antibiotics, immobilization of the injured limb and X-ray, doctors at Con Dao had a remote consultation with Dr. Hoang Manh Cuong, Director of the Orthopedic Trauma Hospital, and Dr. Mai Trong Tuong, a microsurgery specialist.
The consultation results determined that the patient had a knee dislocation, a complex wound in the right popliteal region, a ruptured popliteal artery bundle, and total muscle necrosis in the right calf at 13 hours on the basis of atherosclerosis. This is an urgent emergency, life-threatening due to the patient's massive blood loss and high risk of septic shock due to necrotic tissue.
Following the consultation conclusion, the specialists who are rotating in Con Dao and the doctors of the Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center performed an emergency surgery to amputate the lower middle third of the right thigh. The surgery ended at 11 p.m. the same day, the patient was out of danger and received post-operative care.
