In each place, many people shared the same feelings, expressing their trust and expectations for the new path of the city after the merger: harmonious and sustainable development, for the happiness of the people.

Expecting an integrated and developed city

At a small corner of a cafe near the Ho Chi Minh City Academy of Officials, Mr. Tu Thien Nhon (Ward 25, Binh Thanh Ward) and a group of friends sat over a cup of early coffee and chatted about the city. Mr. Nhon said that his family had lived in this area for many generations, witnessing each road being widened, each bridge being built, each new residential area being formed.

“In the past, this place was deserted and sparsely populated, but now it is different. The infrastructure is spacious and people can trade and travel conveniently. I hope this congress will have more strong, breakthrough decisions so that our city can develop faster and more sustainably,” he said, his eyes fixed on the screen broadcasting the opening session live.

Not only the elderly, but also the city’s youth are particularly excited. In Binh Thanh Ward, Mr. Ly Vu Hoang Giang, Deputy Secretary of the Ward Youth Union, said that he and his fellow members had followed the congress early.

“We hope that the congress will set new directions for education and training, so that young people are equipped with skills and knowledge to integrate and become global citizens. We also hope that digital transformation will be promoted, opening up opportunities for young people to start businesses and innovate,” said Mr. Giang.

In Thu Dau Mot ward, the coffee shop on Bui Quoc Khanh street is unusually busy in the morning. The model of "Morning coffee with the people" in Chanh Nghia 4 ward, which is a place for people to meet and discuss daily life every week, is now even more exciting when the Ho Chi Minh City Party Congress is taking place. Under the cool shade of trees, red flags with yellow stars fluttering in the wind, people sip coffee while discussing the city's major issues: development mechanisms, traffic infrastructure, and new social security policies.

Mrs. Ly Khot The, 82 years old, her voice trembling but her eyes full of pride, said: “I have lived here since the time when it was Song Be land, then witnessed the day of merging with Ho Chi Minh City and Ba Ria - Vung Tau . Each stage of development has its own mark. Now, Ho Chi Minh City is large, crowded, civilized and reaching the regional level. I am proud to be a citizen of the city named after Uncle Ho.”

Next to Ms. The, Ms. Ly Kim Hoa, a Chinese native who has lived in Thu Dau Mot ward for many years, smiled and added: “The city is now a super city, comparable to many places in the region. This congress will be a milestone for the city to make an even stronger breakthrough.”

Mr. Nguyen Van Nem, Deputy Secretary of the Party Cell of Chanh Nghia 4 Ward, a former police officer , said: “I follow the congress every day through newspapers and television. This term is very special, the first term after the merger. I believe that the people of the new Ho Chi Minh City are placing all their trust and expectations in the new Executive Committee, people with heart, vision, who dare to think, dare to do, dare to take responsibility to move the city forward.”

A new journey full of pride

The excitement also spread to every neighborhood and every house. In An Phu ward, in his newly built house, Mr. Nguyen Chanh Tin, from Quang Nam, watched the opening ceremony live on TV. He said that more than 10 years ago, he went to the South to work as a factory worker, now he has a stable house, two children are studying properly, all thanks to this city.

“I expect the new Ho Chi Minh City to continue to be the economic locomotive of the country, but at the same time, we need to take better care of workers, improve the quality of vocational education and train digital human resources so that workers have the opportunity to rise up,” said Mr. Tin.

Also on the morning of October 14, at the Tan Phuoc ward bridge, more than 100 cadres and party members were present early in formal attire. The hall was bright with red flags, banners, and applause resounded every time the live TV screen switched to the image of delegates entering the main hall.

Mr. Nguyen Van Hoang, a long-time party member, was moved: "This congress is a very big milestone. I believe the new Executive Committee will inherit the achievements and continue to build Ho Chi Minh City into a modern, civilized, and humane city."

As a party member present very early at the Saigon ward bridge point, Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tien, Secretary of the Party cell of Ward 12, Saigon ward, said that the party members in the cell and the residents of the ward were very excited and looking forward to the opening session of the congress.

“The people and party members of Ward 12 are very active in carrying out many emulation projects to welcome the congress. It can be said that this is the congress we have been waiting for for a long time and hope that it will open a new era for Ho Chi Minh City to develop to its full potential,” said Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tien.

At the Con Dao Special Zone Public Administration Service Center, Mr. Tran Thanh Tin (born in 1988) came to do social insurance procedures. While waiting for his turn, he and many people stopped in front of the big screen in the central hall, where the opening session of the congress was being broadcast live. After 18 years of being attached to the sacred island, Mr. Tin expressed his emotion, because since the unification, the national electricity grid has been extended to the island, medical teams from the mainland have also regularly come to support, many complicated surgeries have been performed right here.

“I hope that, once it becomes a part of Ho Chi Minh City, Con Dao will receive more investment in tourism infrastructure, and develop more high-end resorts and 3-4 star hotels to serve domestic and foreign tourists,” said Mr. Tin.

The 1st Congress of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee is not only an important political event but also a symbol of consensus - belief - aspiration from the people. At each point, each new area after the merger, the city's people are contributing a small part, in work, in belief, in action to join the Party Committee in continuing the journey of building a special city: civilized, modern, affectionate, for the happiness of the people.
