King oysters
King oysters (also known as sawtooth oysters, ghost oysters, or giant oysters) are a famous specialty on Con Co Island.
Although king oysters also appear in the reef area of Vinh Hoang commune (Vinh Thai commune, old Vinh Linh district), about 2 nautical miles from shore, oysters in Con Co are still considered to be more abundant and delicious.
King oysters in Con Co have outstanding size, as big as an adult hand. Each oyster weighs on average from 1.2-1.5kg, with some weighing up to 3kg.

Because of its fresh quality but limited quantity, king oysters are mainly exploited to serve the culinary needs of Con Co, only a small number are transported to the mainland. Therefore, even rich tourists find it difficult to buy and enjoy this specialty.
Oyster meat is firm and sweet, can be eaten fresh or processed into many attractive cooked dishes such as oyster porridge, grilled oysters with scallion oil. People in Con Co also transform king oysters into some delicious dishes such as: Grilled oysters with cheese sauce, Thai oyster sauce, oysters...
Buffalo meat with wild leaves
This is one of the familiar specialties to people in Quang Tri but arouses curiosity among diners from all over because of its strange name, which at first glance seems to be misspelled.
Trong (or truong) is a type of leaf that grows naturally in Quang Tri and can be picked all year round. This type of leaf is a bit hard, has small sharp thorns on the edge of the leaf and deep veins. Trong leaves have a spicy, characteristic aroma, especially when processed with buffalo meat, it enhances the unique flavor.

From two main ingredients, buffalo meat and wild betel leaves, locals can prepare many different dishes such as stir-fries, stews, steamed dishes, hot pots, etc.
However, the two most delicious and popular dishes are grilled buffalo meat and stir-fried buffalo meat with trong leaves.
Not only attractive for its diverse preparation methods and delicious flavor, buffalo meat with wild betel leaves is also considered very nutritious.
According to Oriental medicine, buffalo meat is sweet, cool, non-toxic, has the effect of strengthening the spleen and stomach, strengthening tendons and bones, enriching blood, helping to treat rheumatism, swelling, numbness, back pain, swollen legs...
The leaves are warm and anti-cold, so when eaten with buffalo meat, it is considered an effective "medicine" for people who often have cold hands and feet, or the elderly who often have aches and pains in their joints.
