Dang Thai Son plays Chopin music again in Hanoi

Pianist Dang Thai Son returned to Vietnam to play Chopin's Concerto No. 2 in the Dang Thai Son Returns concert taking place on the evening of December 21 at the Hoan Kiem Theater ( Hanoi ).

44 years have passed, this concerto resounds in Hanoi in winter, evoking many memories of the 44-year period, longer than Chopin's short life of 39 years.

This is a winter song 44 years ago, after winning first prize at the 1980 Chopin International Piano Competition, the artist returned to Vietnam and performed at the Hanoi Opera House for 10 consecutive nights.

Artist Dang Thai Son wrote on his Facebook page that Dang Thai Son Returns is a special concert celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of his father - poet Dang Dinh Hung (1924 - 2024).

The concert was a night with many "firsts": first time performing at Hoan Kiem Theater, first time letting loose with the Sun Symphony Orchestra and conductor Olivier Ochanine.

It was also the first time this Concerto by Chopin was performed at the Chopin International Piano Competition in Poland in 1980. Dang Thai Son said he "loved this piece because of the immortal second movement: Chopin's first love".

In addition to Concerto No. 2, according to initial information, the artist also played Hindemith's Mathis Der Maler symphony and Nielsen's Aladdin suite.

Previously in the middle of the year, he returned to the country to perform the opening performance of the Timeless Resonance - Endless Sound program series.

The event is part of his and his students' world tour, Vietnam is the first location on this tour.

Artist Dang Thai Son has now retired from the University of Montreal - where he taught for the past several decades.

However, the artist is busier because in addition to performing, he also judges several international piano competitions and teaches at two very large conservatories in the US: Oberlin Conservatory (Ohio) and New England (Boston). He currently has about 30 students.
