Since 2017, the price of rubber latex has started to decline, at one point it was only over 170 VND/1 degree. However, the price of rubber latex in Binh Phuoc province has now increased again to the highest level in the past 8 years. This is a good sign for rubber farmers and latex tapping workers.

Rubber farmers excited as output gradually stabilizes

Mr. Le Van Phung's family in Cay Da village, Phu Van commune, Bu Gia Map district (Binh Phuoc province) has 3 hectares of rubber.

This is the main source of income for his family, but for many years the price of rubber has been low, making life difficult. Last year the price started to rise, and he felt excited.

This November, the price of rubber latex skyrocketed to 510 VND/1 degree, about 18,000 VND/kg of latex, 2.5 times higher than 8 years ago, he and other rubber growers were very excited.

“This year, the price of rubber is higher than every year. I am very happy. This price has reduced some of the burden on my life. The higher the price of rubber, the better the profit for farmers. I hope this price will last for a few years,” said Mr. Phung.

Mr. Truong Van Don, Hamlet 7, Tan Hiep Commune, Hon Quan District (Binh Phuoc Province) said that this year's latex price is more than 200 VND/1 degree higher than last year, but this year's output is lower than last year.

However, the price increase will help rubber growers have a stable source of income, as well as reinvest in crops in the following years.

"The current price of rubber latex cannot be compared to the "golden" period, but compared to previous years, it is a dream for rubber growers. A stable income will help people reinvest in garden care to achieve higher yields," said Mr. Don.

Mr. Le Van Phung, a rubber farmer in Cay Da village, Phu Van commune, Bu Gia Map district (Binh Phuoc province) taps latex in his family's rubber garden.

In addition to family income, rubber gardens during harvest season also create jobs for many local workers.

The increase in latex purchase price not only makes rubber growers happy but also the workers who tap for hire are happy because their wages will increase accordingly. Those who are familiar with the job and are diligent can earn from 350,000 to 400,000 VND/person/day.

Mr. Nguyen Van Sang, Cay Da village, Phu Van commune, Bu Gia Map district (Binh Phuoc province) has worked as a latex tapper for many years, but the latex price has dropped so his salary is not high, just enough to get by.

Lately, rubber prices have skyrocketed, and the garden owner who hired him has also increased his salary, making him very excited. “My family doesn’t have any land, so I’ve been tapping rubber latex for hire for 7-8 years. This year, the latex price is at its highest, which is beneficial for the garden owner, so they’ve also increased the daily wage for workers, and we’re happy,” said Sang.

The rising price of rubber has brought joy to farmers, especially amid recent difficulties caused by natural disasters and epidemics.

With that encouraging signal, in addition to effective exploitation, smallholder rubber growers and workers who make a living from tapping rubber latex in localities in the province are continuing to invest in fertilizers and supplement nutrients for rubber gardens to increase growth, maintain and develop crops in a sustainable direction.

Actively care for and stabilize rubber gardens

The increase in rubber prices is helping households and rubber workers in Binh Phuoc improve their income and have a more stable life.

Binh Phuoc province currently has over 244,000 hectares of rubber, of which smallholder rubber accounts for about 30%. Rubber trees are still one of the perennial crops that bring a stable source of income to the people, accounting for more than 50% of the province's main perennial crop area.

Although latex prices have been continuously increasing, according to many rubber growers, this year's output has decreased by about 20% compared to last year. The reason is due to the impact of extreme weather, some gardens have not invested much in care due to low prices...

Mr. Le Ngoc Dao, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Phu Van Commune, Bu Gia Map District (Binh Phuoc Province) said: At this time, the purchase price of rubber latex has skyrocketed to nearly double compared to last year, the highest in the past 8 years.

This is a signal that brings much joy to rubber farmers. To ensure the garden grows well and has high yield, rubber growers should invest in care, reduce the number of times of tapping, only tapping D3 (tapping once every 3 days) or D4 (tapping once every 4 days).

Over-harvesting latex from rubber trees to compensate for low prices will affect the longevity, latex yield and quality of the orchard.

"Over the past time, the functional sector has maintained monitoring of disease developments and promptly handled any outbreaks on crops. Thereby, the pest situation on all crops is at a mild level, with insignificant impact on crop growth and development," Mr. Dao added.

Mr. Tran Hai Ha, Head of the Department of Agriculture of Hon Quan district (Binh Phuoc province) said: In recent years, when rubber prices were low, many households were not interested in caring for and exploiting them, so the district directed localities to propagate and mobilize people to preserve rubber acreage, not cut them down and switch to planting other trees.

In the coming time, if rubber prices remain stable, the district will continue to direct rubber growers to care for and exploit rubber trees with the right techniques to ensure the long-term effectiveness of this industrial crop.

The sharp increase in rubber prices compared to the beginning of the year not only helps rubber growers have higher revenue, improve their income, and have a stable life, but also creates more jobs in rural areas.

However, according to Mr. Le Ngoc Dao, the agricultural sector needs to advise people to properly implement local planning and orientation, and not to see the high price of rubber and massively expand the planting area.
