To avoid overload when reviewing for high school graduation exams and capacity assessment

According to Mr. Thanh, 2024 is the last year that students studying the 2006 General Education Program will take the graduation exam and the exam will remain stable as in 2023. Accordingly, the exam content will closely follow the high school program, mainly grade 12. Students will review based on the core knowledge of the grade 12 program and knowledge of lower grades that are related and continue with the knowledge content of grade 12.

With the guidance of teachers, students can use many different ways to systematize knowledge. For example, create tables, draw diagrams, mind maps or outlines to summarize important and core knowledge content in a way that students find easiest to remember and understand.

"Teachers should not ask students to do too many exercises and tests of the same type, but can only do a sufficient number that covers all types of exercises corresponding to the requirements of the core content. How can students grasp the knowledge, be able to apply it, be able to compare, and clearly see the relationship between knowledge units? Doing exercises and practicing is a way to review previously systematized knowledge," Mr. Thanh noted.

Regarding the policy of the exam questions to reasonably increase some content related to practical application in some subjects, Mr. Thanh also noted: "Students need to pay attention to open questions related to real life, requiring the application of knowledge to solve a certain problem in life. The life situations in the exam questions may not be in the book or in the lecture content, but when you have mastered the basic knowledge, you can meet the requirements."

During the review process for students at schools, Mr. Thanh said that the Ministry of Education and Training has also reminded schools to classify students' levels to have review plans close to the target groups. Depending on the target groups of students, teachers can provide students with additional reference materials for further practice, but not too much, causing unnecessary overload. "There is another basis for students to refer to when reviewing, which is the reference exam questions of the subjects announced by the Ministry of Education and Training. Students can look at them to know the structure and how to ask questions in the exam. Looking at the reference exam questions, students can distinguish questions at different levels. From there, they can have a review orientation and not be surprised when entering the official exam," Mr. Thanh said.

Grade 12 students will take their high school graduation exam this year at the end of June.

Regarding whether students should participate in mock exams, Department Head Nguyen Xuan Thanh said: "Students can participate in mock exams organized by schools, but not too many. Students also need to note that not all mock exams are guaranteed to be close to the requirements of the program. Therefore, mock exam results may not accurately reflect their own abilities. If this is not clearly determined, students may be confused and worried when they get low scores or subjective when they get high scores. Both of these psychological states are not good for students when entering the official exam.

Because many high school students taking the graduation exam also take the aptitude and thinking assessment exams for university admission, Associate Professor Nguyen Xuan Thanh noted: "The aptitude and thinking assessment exams or high school graduation exams all closely follow the general education program content that students have learned. Therefore, to do well in the exams, students must have a firm grasp of the basic knowledge of high school subjects and ensure that they do not study lopsidedly but spend equal time studying and reviewing all subjects. To avoid overload, students should have a firm grasp of basic knowledge during the learning process."
