On October 21, European Union (EU) Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic said that the bloc and China have agreed to hold "urgent" talks in Brussels (Belgium) regarding China's rare earth export control measures.
Speaking to reporters at the European Parliament in Strasbourg (France) after a two-hour phone call with Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao, Commissioner Sefcovic confirmed that he had invited Chinese officials to Brussels in the coming days to seek urgent solutions to China's rare earth export controls that are "casting a shadow" over EU-China relations.
Minister Vuong Van Dao accepted this invitation.
Mr. Sefcovic added that during the constructive phone call, the two sides also agreed to increase communication at all levels.
The move took place in the context of China's decision on October 9 to tighten control over the export of rare earths and rare earth-related technologies, forcing some companies in the EU to stop production and causing economic damage.
