Former midfielder Rio Ferdinand believes he would be worth $216 million based on the current transfer market.
"In 2002, Man Utd spent 38 million USD to recruit me. Due to inflation, my value would be 127 million USD more at this time. But 127 million is still cheap, my friend. Seriously, I would be worth 216 million USD in the current market, and would earn 508,000 USD per week. If I were still playing, my value would be the same," Ferdinand replied on Youtube channel Five when asked to value himself.

Ferdinand has twice broken the record for the most expensive defender in history. The first time was in 2000, when he became the record signing in English football when he moved from West Ham to Leeds for $23 million. A year later, Juventus broke that record when they spent $29 million to buy Lilian Thuram from Parma.
However, Ferdinand regained his status in 2002, when he moved to Man Utd for 38 million USD. This record stood for 10 years before PSG bought Thiago Silva from Milan for 45 million USD. Since then, clubs have spent more money on the defender position.
The current record also belongs to a Man Utd player, when they spent 97 million USD to recruit Harry Maguire from Leicester in the summer of 2019. Ferdinand believes he would have broken this record if he had played. However, Man City could break the record this summer if they buy Croatian center-back Josko Gvardiol from RB Leipzig.
At Old Trafford, Ferdinand became a legend, winning six Premier League titles, two League Cups and the 2007-08 Champions League. In 2014, the 44-year-old left Man Utd after 312 appearances. He played another season for Queens Park Rangers before retiring in 2015. Ferdinand regularly commentates on football and recently produced his own Podcast.
The current world football transfer record is Neymar's move from Barca to PSG in the summer of 2017. At that time, the French club spent a total of 263 million USD to break the Brazilian striker's contract with the Camp Nou team.
