“This support must cover all family components, including multigenerational and extended families, single-parent households, LGBTQ+ families and Indigenous kinship groups,” said Australia’s representative on behalf of several countries.

They called on states and UN agencies to "ensure that equality, non-discrimination and the universality of human rights remain central to engagement in support of families".

Argentina, Brazil, Britain, Canada, Germany, Mexico, Spain and the United States are among the signatories.

The statement comes as several other countries, particularly from the Middle East, are stepping up their defense of the traditional family at United Nations forums.

Issues of sexual orientation and gender identity will be at the heart of the 53rd session of the Human Rights Council, which began on Monday and runs until mid-July.
