Standing at a certain angle of observation, we will see interesting things. For example, cinema is a dish that turns out to be quite easy to please the crowd, not as sublime as critics imagine. PR tricks can attract some people to the theater, but there must be something new that makes a movie stand up week after week, just as the fever of movie reviews on social networks has not ended.
Personally, I don’t like movies that are making waves in theaters like Tran Thanh’s “Mai”. But that’s my personal opinion, it doesn’t represent the opinions and preferences of many people. Therefore, reaching out to many people, attracting many people to the theater to be moved and write their feelings enthusiastically on their personal pages, no matter what, we still have to acknowledge the talent of the filmmakers.
When I read the first reviews of the movie “Mai” that appeared on social networks, I thought it was a Tet movie trend that would soon pass. But now I can no longer think that way, because there are too many articles that continue to be written, by people that I know exactly how they write according to their personal needs, their feelings and thoughts, it does not adhere to any theory or artistic criteria.
So what, art is ultimately for the public. It's fine as long as the audience finds it interesting and it doesn't degrade or corrupt moral and aesthetic values.
It is noted that a filmmaking phenomenon like Tran Thanh is bringing a new life to “made in Vietnam” cinemas. Clearly, between the fact that people go to the cinema to watch, then go home and enthusiastically discuss, and the fact that there are films ordered by the state but only have a few screenings and then are put in storage, Tran Thanh deserves to be the “king” of the box office.
From this perspective, it must be noted that the movie "Mai" is a phenomenon of the 2024 Tet movie season and has a great contribution in attracting audiences to theaters, making audiences pay attention to Vietnamese movies.
However, as said, we are not discussing whether the movie "Mai" is good or bad, but a cinema that wants to develop and truly flourish cannot rely on such isolated phenomena.
“Mai” may attract audiences to the cinema during the Tet holiday, but “Mai” does not make us more optimistic about the appearance of our country’s cinema. “Mai” does not open an artistic trend nor reveal a new generation of filmmakers…
A cinema industry cannot expect to make films like "Mai", but from here, it creates opportunities that the cinema industry should take advantage of to thrive.
Obviously, between the fact that people go to the cinema to watch and then go home and talk about it enthusiastically, and the fact that there are films ordered by the state but only screened a few times and then put in storage, Tran Thanh deserves to be the "king" of the box office. From this perspective, it must be noted that the film "Mai" is a phenomenon of the 2024 Tet film season and has a great contribution in attracting audiences to the cinema, making audiences pay attention to Vietnamese films.
