African swine fever and the “contactless farming” model
According to information from the Agriculture and Environment newspaper, African swine fever (ASF) is constantly changing its species, making the "contactless farming" model a potential solution to help farmers protect their pigs more effectively.
African swine fever remains a major concern for Vietnamese livestock farmers, especially small-scale households. The disease not only causes heavy economic losses but also forces many families to stop raising livestock or change jobs.
In the first months of 2025, the disease still broke out in many provinces and cities across the country. This is not the first time Vietnam has faced ASF, because since 2019, the disease has caused serious damage many times, forcing thousands of pig farming households to stop operating.
Mr. Pham Kim Dang, Deputy Director of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, said the danger of this disease is not only in Vietnam but also around the world. He expressed deep sympathy for livestock farmers, especially small-scale households, for the huge losses that have occurred. Controlling and preventing ASF is an extremely difficult challenge.
Although Vietnam has licensed three vaccines against African swine fever, recent studies show that the virus has mutated to become more virulent, making vaccination and disease control much more complicated. This requires long-term and stable solutions that do not depend solely on vaccines.
In that context, the “contactless farming” model is considered a promising new direction, with high efficiency and easy to apply. This model focuses on improving biosecurity by completely preventing contact between pathogens and livestock, helping to minimize the risk of infection.
According to the livestock industry, the price of live pigs in October may continue to fluctuate slightly according to the epidemic situation and consumption demand. If the epidemic prevention work is well controlled and the pork supply is stable, the price will remain around the current level.
However, the risk of African swine fever outbreaks still exists, especially in changing seasons and high humidity. Localities are advised to speed up vaccination, maintain hygiene and disinfect barns to minimize risks.
