Pig price in Central Highlands
In the Central region, the price of live pigs on October 9 remained stable, fluctuating between 50,000 - 54,000 VND/kg depending on the region. The difference is mainly due to geographical factors and transportation costs. This is currently the region with the most stable price in the country, with no significant fluctuations for many consecutive days.
Southern pig price
The Southern market on the same day recorded a downward trend in some key localities. Prices in Tay Ninh and Can Tho fell to 54,000 VND/kg. The average price in the entire Southern region is currently around 53,800 VND/kg - lower than in the Northern region. Experts said that the reason for the price decrease is due to a slight increase in supply from large-scale farms, while consumption demand has not improved significantly.
On October 7, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Ho Chi Minh City held a conference to deploy solutions to prevent African swine fever, with nearly 100 attendees including livestock farmers, farm owners, veterinary stations and representatives of communes and wards in Binh Duong area, according to the Government Newspaper.
According to a report by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine of Ho Chi Minh City, the city currently has more than 1.3 million pigs, of which 72% are concentrated in the area formerly belonging to Binh Duong province. Statistics also show that large-scale livestock farms account for only 5.3% of the total number of establishments but account for 71% of the total pig herd in the area.
Mr. Tran Phu Cuong - Head of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine of Ho Chi Minh City - said that recently, the industry has coordinated with functional agencies and local authorities to synchronously deploy many measures to prevent African swine fever at livestock facilities, slaughterhouses, and transit points, while clearly defining the responsibilities of each relevant unit and agency.
Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Ho Chi Minh City Vo Thanh Giau affirmed: “African swine fever always has the potential to recur, especially when the transportation and trade of pigs between localities is increasingly complicated. The city needs close coordination between the government, the veterinary sector and livestock facilities to ensure biosafety and maintain a stable food supply for the people.”
The leaders of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Ho Chi Minh City also requested the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine to strengthen professional guidance for commune and ward officials in state management of animal husbandry and disease prevention.
For communes and wards, he requested to strengthen the grassroots epidemic prevention steering committee to ensure timely response, especially to immediately deploy emergency solutions when there are signs of an epidemic.
In the context of the continued fluctuation of pig prices and the risk of disease still existing, simultaneously controlling prices, protecting the interests of farmers and promoting disease prevention are considered key factors to help maintain stability for the pig farming industry in the coming time.
