Canadian Green Party leader Elizabeth May says US President-elect Donald Trump's 'joke' about Canada becoming the 51st US state is 'not funny'

According to The Hill , President-elect Trump once took to social media to "tease" Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and called him the "Governor" of "great Canada."

"It was a pleasure to have dinner with Governor Justin Trudeau of Canada. I look forward to seeing him again soon so we can continue our extensive negotiations on tariffs and trade, the results of which will be truly spectacular for everyone," Mr. Trump shared on the Truth Social platform on December 10.

Earlier, Mr. Trump also suggested that Canada should become the 51st state of the US and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau should be the governor during a meeting between the two on the evening of November 29 at the Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida (USA). "If Canada wants to avoid a series of trade tariffs, it should consider joining the US," Mr. Trump said.

Commenting on Mr. Trump's recent actions, Canadian Green Party Leader Elizabeth May said on December 10 that she had not seen the post but expressed concern about a similar post by US President-elect Trump.

"I haven't seen it, so I probably shouldn't comment," May said. "I'll just comment on the Truth Social post about Donald Trump planting a Canadian flag on a mountain in Canada - I have to say the 51st state comment was a joke, it wasn't funny at all and I find pursuing that topic on social media increasingly worrying me," May said.

The leader of Canada's Green Party also called for unity among parties to protect the country's reputation on the world stage.

"We have to be very, very careful with President-elect Trump, and we have to come together. I think all the opposition leaders, all the elements of the Canadian political establishment should come together to make sure that we don't create any cracks that allow Fox News or Trump's social media to take advantage of us and say things about Canada that are not true," May stressed.
