With a strong squad strengthened in the summer, Liverpool entered the match with great enthusiasm. In the 4th minute, new signing Hugo Ekitike opened the scoring with a neat move to eliminate Adam Wharton and then shoot diagonally past goalkeeper Dean Henderson.

However, Crystal Palace – who were playing in the Community Shield for the first time in their 119-year history – did not take long to respond. In the 15th minute, Ismaila Sarr won a penalty after being fouled by Van Dijk, and Jean-Philippe Mateta beat Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker from the penalty spot to level the score at 1-1.

Liverpool's attacking power continued to be shown in the 21st minute. Jeremie Frimpong accelerated down the right wing before making a surprising chip that hit the Palace net, putting "The Kop" up 2-1, surprising both goalkeeper Henderson and the opposing defense.

In the following minutes, the match was evenly matched, Palace even had a chance to equalize right at the end of the first half but Ismaila Sarr missed the ball from close range.

In the second half, coach Oliver Glasner instructed his players to push up their attacking formation. The turning point came in the 77th minute during a counter-attack, Adam Wharton made a delicate pass for Ismaila Sarr to escape down the left. The Senegalese striker shot the ball off the inside of the post and into the net, bringing the match to a 2-2 balance.

After 90 minutes of official play ended in a draw, the two teams had to enter a penalty shootout to compete for the trophy. This is a scenario not uncommon at the Community Shield – where in 7/9 recent seasons, the final result had to be determined by kicks from the 11 meter mark.

In the nerve-wracking shootout, Liverpool failed to show their determination as only Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai scored while Mohamed Salah, Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Eliott all missed. Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson made excellent saves from Mac Allister and Harvey Eliott, making an important contribution to Crystal Palace's first Community Shield victory.

Palace's victory was not only a valuable morale boost for a team participating in the Community Shield for the first time, but also an affirmation that they were not only lucky to win the FA Cup last season (beating Man City in the final).

Indomitable spirit, precision in the penalty shootout and courage under great pressure brought meaningful glory to the team of coach Oliver Glasner, the first Austrian coach to win the Community Shield.
