Dozens of cars involved in a series of accidents on the US highway

Portland city officials (Oregon state, USA) on February 13 informed about a series of accidents that occurred on the highway, in whiteout weather conditions due to a snowstorm.

The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office said the incident happened on Interstate 84 on February 13. An SUV caught fire and everyone inside escaped. Authorities initially said more than 100 cars were involved in the crash. However, the Oregon Department of Transportation later said there were between 20 and 30 vehicles involved, according to AP. Local officials said the whiteout caused by wind and snow made it difficult to determine how many vehicles were involved.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene and each vehicle was inspected, with reports of injuries, though the exact number is unclear. The crash occurred around 11 a.m. local time on February 13, forcing authorities to temporarily close a 4-mile stretch of Highway 84. Oregon State Police said there were at least eight separate crashes on the highway, with four people taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Authorities said the weather outside was “white out” due to wind and snow. “The multiple crashes were caused by high winds in the snow, in addition to drivers driving too fast for the winter weather conditions in the area,” the Oregon Department of Transportation said.

The above incident was one of many consecutive accidents recorded on February 13, during the winter snowstorm in the two states of Oregon and Washington in the northwest of the US.

In Washington state, which borders northern Oregon, six people were taken to the hospital after a 22-vehicle pileup on Interstate 5. Five counties in Washington recorded 95 accidents on February 13.
