On the evening of October 5, Sevilla defeated Barcelona 4-1 in round 8 of La Liga. Few people expected a team that had been in financial trouble since the beginning of the season and was expected to compete for relegation to play so well.

In June, Sevilla – after a disastrous 2024/25 season in which they finished 17th in La Liga, narrowly missed out on relegation and missed out on European football – hired Almeyda on a three-year contract until 2028. He is their eighth manager in three years, highlighting the instability at the top.

The Chilean striker moved to Sevilla last month on a free transfer, in an effort to save the final stage of his career. He also favours a 4-4-2 diamond formation, taking advantage of the squad depth with support from Erik Lamela – a former player now an assistant.
