The derivatives market continues to set new trading records, with open contract volume exceeding the highest level since the beginning of the year.
HNX liquidity increased sharply, foreign investors net bought
In August 2025, the stock market listed on the Hanoi Stock Exchange (HNX) continued to trade actively.
The HNX-Index ended August at 279.98 points, up 5.68% from the previous month. The highest level recorded in the month was 286.45 points on August 19.
Liquidity – the volume and value of shares traded on the market – increased sharply. On average, the trading volume (V) per session reached 171.1 million shares, up 20% compared to July; the average trading value (GTGD) reached 3,802 billion VND, up 13.79%. Notably, the session on August 5 recorded a record with 258.5 million shares, equivalent to 5,700 billion VND.
Foreign investors also participated more actively, with transaction value increasing 38% compared to the previous month. Total purchases reached 4,482 billion VND, sales 3,978 billion VND, thereby net buying 504 billion VND. Meanwhile, self-trading - investment activities using capital from securities companies - recorded transaction value of more than 477 billion VND, up 7.6% compared to the previous month but net selling 279 billion VND.
As of the end of the month, HNX had 304 listed companies with a total listing value of more than VND166 trillion. Market capitalization – the total value of all outstanding shares – reached more than VND388.1 trillion, down 1% compared to July 2025.
Derivatives market breaks record, open interest hits year-to-date peak
Along with the underlying stocks, the derivatives market – where financial instruments such as futures contracts are traded – also maintained a boom.
In August 2025, VN30 index futures (a derivative instrument based on a basket of 30 large-cap stocks on HOSE) continued to increase sharply. On average, 336,436 contracts were traded per session, up 40.04% compared to the previous month. The average transaction value (in contract terms) reached VND59,598 billion, up 55.66%. The session on August 22 recorded a record with 555,543 contracts.
Notably, open interest (OI) – the number of derivative contracts outstanding at any given time – hit a year-to-date high of 68,174 contracts on August 20, surpassing the July record. However, by the end of August, this figure had dropped to 50,418 contracts, down 13.14% from the previous month.
In terms of structure, securities companies' self-trading accounted for 1.9% of total volume, down from 2.2% in July. Foreign investors slightly reduced their transactions, accounting for 2.33% of total volume.
