Today 2G signal is turned off, will the demand to buy 4G phones increase sharply?

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên15/10/2024

According to the announced plan, from today, October 15, the push-button phone line using 2G Only technology will officially be turned off. Many distributors predict that the demand for 4G phones will increase rapidly after this time. Why is that?

Only a few people switched to 4G phones when the new technology was launched.

From October 15, 2G Only technology will officially stop working, marking the necessary transition to 4G phones. With the number of 2G subscribers dropping sharply to less than 1 million, the market for buying and selling push-button phones has become quiet. Most users have proactively upgraded to 4G phones, causing the demand for buying and selling push-button phones on social networks to decrease significantly.

In addition to supporting discounts and giving preferential SIM cards to help people easily switch, recently, network operators have supported the cost of 4G Only phones combined with conversion packages, and supported up to 100% of the cost of 4G phones. Network operators have prepared a number of 4G phones to support compensation (100% of the cost) for their 2G Only subscribers. Some mobile businesses have policies to support giving away phones without registering for a package for poor households, near-poor households, subscribers in remote, isolated and difficult areas to switch to 4G phones. According to Viettel network representative, in September and October, the number of customers going to stores to switch was very rare. Mr. Nguyen The Kha, Commercial Director ofFPT Shop system also said: "FPT Shop system has no shortage because the supply has been prepared enough since the end of September. And the number of customers who have not upgraded to 4G is expected to be under 1 million, so sales have not increased dramatically in recent days." At some other phone distribution stores, the purchasing power of 4G phones has shown signs of slowing down. Network operators said that the number of 2G subscribers is mainly two groups of customers: one group is in remote areas that are difficult to contact or insist on using old phones until they can no longer be used, and the other group is using secondary SIMs and rarely turns on the phone to communicate. Therefore, currently, the need for conversion is basically saturated and the market is less "hot" than before.

Why will the fever return?

Many people who mistakenly bought fake 4G phones (which are actually 2G phones) may be shocked when their SIMs stop working after October 15.

While the situation was relatively stable before the signal cut-off, surprisingly, many phone providers predicted that the demand for 4G phones would increase after October 15. FPT Shop representative commented: "According to our prediction, the demand for 4G phones will increase dramatically from the official signal cut-off date. When the old 2G phones can no longer be used, the remaining customers will upgrade their phones to the 4G version. It is predicted that this number of customers will be around 500,000 - million people. If they rush to change to new phones, the demand will increase suddenly." Talking to Thanh Nien reporter, Mr. Nguyen Viet Hoang, General Director of HMD Global Indochina region also shared: "The situation of purchasing and exchanging 4G phones has shown signs of slowing down recently, right before the time of shutting down the signal on October 15. Currently, the shipment of HMD's 4G push-button phones is still on the way to the port, expected to be released to the market on October 20. However, we are not too worried about that, because the demand for exchanging phones may increase again after October 15". Mr. Nguyen Viet Hoang explained: "In addition to the number of customers waiting until "the water reaches their feet before jumping", the 4G phone market in the past time has had many people mistakenly buying fake and counterfeit goods, although the signal bar shows 4G but in reality only uses 2G technology. The number of customers mistakenly buying "fake" goods is estimated to be up to hundreds of thousands of people. Perhaps when the network operators officially turn off the signal on October 15, they will realize that their phones can no longer be used, and thus force them to buy new phones." Faced with this rather complicated reality, Mr. Nguyen Phong Nha, Deputy Director of the Telecommunications Department, recommended: "Network operators should work together to create a database of 2G subscribers who are no longer connected after October 15 to communicate more strongly and provide full information to users to avoid buying 2G phones labeled as 3G, 4G, which cannot be used. Buying back 2G terminals is also a measure to help collect and process electronic waste properly, avoiding the number of terminals being thrown away, destroyed as normal garbage, or reused incorrectly." Some network operators such as VNPT and MobiFone said they will reserve accounts and have more special policies for subscribers whose signal is cut off after October 15.
