Dam Ha District: Restoring agricultural production after the storm

Storm No. 3 caused heavy damage to the district's agricultural production, estimated at over 620 billion VND. The district is making efforts to overcome difficulties and gradually restore and stabilize production.

These days, all employees of Bac Viet Aquaculture and Production Cooperative (Dam Ha commune) are urgently repairing the damaged greenhouse system after the storm. Mr. Ngo Vinh Hanh, Director of the Cooperative, said: Storm No. 3 blew off the entire roof, damaged part of the steel frame, the entire electrical and gas systems of 4 greenhouses with an area of ^6,000m2 . More than 4 million 5-day-old fish larvae being raised in the greenhouses were damaged by rainwater flooding into the tanks. Immediately after the storm, the Cooperative organized a cleanup, quickly overcame the consequences; reinforced the frame system, covered the greenhouse, reinstalled the electrical and gas systems... to stabilize production in time for the season. The Cooperative is raising more than 200,000 fish larvae of 4-9cm in size, producing larvae, ensuring the Cooperative's source of fish and supplying the market.

In Quang Lam commune, immediately after the storm, local authorities and villages went to review and count the damage caused by the storm; support and guide people to overcome the consequences and restore agricultural and forestry production.

Mr. Tang A Tai's family (Thanh Binh village, Quang Lam commune) spends almost every day in the forest breaking cinnamon bark, harvesting it, and minimizing damage caused by storms. Mr. Tai said: "After 9 years of sweat and effort, it will only be 2-3 years before harvest, but storm No. 3 has destroyed all 3 hectares of 9-year-old cinnamon of my family. After the storm, my whole family goes into the forest every day to break cinnamon bark, hoping to get back a little bit of the wages."

According to preliminary statistics of Quang Lam commune, storm No. 3 damaged forestry production of 259 households with a damaged forest area of more than 870 hectares (more than 660 hectares of acacia, more than 200 hectares of cinnamon). Immediately after the storm, local authorities and people reviewed and counted the damaged forest area, guided and supported people to overcome the damage and restore production.

The whole district has 586.56 hectares of rice, 50.9 hectares of sugarcane, vegetables, 2,997.04 hectares of acacia, eucalyptus, 732.45 hectares of cinnamon, 7 hectares of fruit trees fell and broken; estimated damage to agriculture and forestry is more than 253.4 billion VND. In the livestock sector, 27,537 poultry died, swept away by floods; 6 buffaloes were struck and killed by lightning, estimated damage is more than 8.4 billion VND. The aquaculture sector suffered heavy damage with 102 floating houses, 697 hectares of oyster farms, 134 fish cages, 21 hectares of clam farms lost or damaged at 147 farms; estimated damage is more than 351.8 billion VND.

Infrastructure serving agricultural production was also severely damaged, including 7 dams, over 1,100m of irrigation canals, 120 clean water supply pipes damaged, broken, collapsed... By September 23, the total estimated damage caused by storm No. 3 in the district was more than 711.4 billion VND; of which damage to agriculture, forestry and fishery was more than 620 billion VND.

Immediately after the storm, in the agricultural sector, the district directed the functional sector to coordinate with localities to focus on overcoming and restoring production, including guiding and supporting people to take care of and rebuild fallen crops; repair collapsed or blown-off barns; collect floating materials at sea; repair and reinforce damaged cages and watchtowers; collect fallen or broken planted forest areas... The work of calculating damage and preparing documents to request support for damage in the agricultural sector is being urgently carried out by communes and towns to promptly support people.
