Not only is Ho Chi Minh City a major economic center, it also aims to become a creative city in culture and art. Therefore, investing in creative activities, performing and promoting art is considered an important step to form a solid spiritual foundation, arousing the desire to contribute of the city's people.
Shaping a new cultural landscape
During the 2020-2025 period, Ho Chi Minh City will continuously expand its creative, promotional and performing arts activities, bringing cultural life closer to the public.
Hundreds of art programs were directed and staged by the City Department of Culture and Sports , including many large-scale programs bearing the city's own mark such as "City of Love - Aspiration to Reach Far", "Pride of My Fatherland", "Imprint of the City Named After Uncle Ho"...
These programs not only serve political tasks but also contribute to nurturing spiritual life, inspiring pride and love for the homeland in every citizen.
Along with that, many annual festivals and cultural events continue to be maintained and invested in, becoming typical brands of the City such as: "Can Gio Whale Festival", "Hôzo International Music Festival", "Southern Amateur Music Festival", "Autumn Melodies Academic Arts Festival"...
Each program has its own unique features, both honoring traditional values and expressing creative aspirations, affirming the image of a dynamic, friendly and affectionate city.
In particular, the film industry has continued to make a clear mark in recent years. Ho Chi Minh City is currently the largest film production and distribution center in the country, accounting for about 40% of the Vietnamese film market share. In 2023, the first Ho Chi Minh City Short Film Festival attracted 96 entries, including 60 feature films, 23 documentaries and 13 animations.
The event not only honors young filmmakers but also affirms the strong creativity of the new generation in reflecting urban life and the City's people.
Following that success, in April 2024, the first Ho Chi Minh City International Film Festival (HIFF 2024) was held, gathering more than 400 competing films, 87 scripts participating in the Vietnamese Script Incubator and attracting more than 250,000 audiences to attend sideline activities.
This is an important milestone, marking a step forward in the goal of turning the City into a "Creative City in the field of cinema", contributing to the building of a modern cultural industry and international integration.
According to Mr. Cong Hau, Vice President of the Ho Chi Minh City Cinema Association, it is the open creative environment that has helped the city's cinema develop strongly.
Over the years, the City has always been a pioneer in reflecting the breath of life through modern cinematic language.
Organizing film festivals, supporting production and promoting works has created conditions for artists to affirm their names, contributing to raising the image of the City on the regional cinema map.
Similarly, according to People's Artist My Uyen, Ho Chi Minh City is not only the "cradle" of new artistic experiments but also a place connecting creative flows across the country.
The support of the government and the public has created a favorable environment for artists to boldly create, contributing to shaping the modern cultural appearance of the City.
Accompanying the development of the City
Along with developing art forms, Ho Chi Minh City always identifies literature as the spiritual foundation of society, the driving force for human and community development.
To maintain that goal, literary associations have always strived to innovate their activities, focusing on topics closely related to modern life, reflecting the urban breath and the kindness of the city's people.
According to writer Tram Huong, Vice President of the City Writers' Association, over the past 5 years, the Association has organized many creative campaigns on the topic of Ho Chi Minh City, attracting hundreds of authors from many generations.
The Association also focuses on training many young writers, publishing anthologies introducing new works, creating a dynamic and public-friendly creative environment.
“We hope that each work contributes to spreading beautiful stories, nurturing faith and aspirations for a civilized, modern, and humane city,” writer Tram Huong shared.
In the fields of music, theater, photography, fine arts, etc., professional associations actively innovate methods of composing, organizing exhibitions, and publishing works in a more professional direction, connecting more closely with the public.
Many works deeply reflect the process of innovation, urbanization, heritage conservation, human development and the aspiration to build a livable city.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture and Sports of Ho Chi Minh City, said that in the recent past, the city's literature and arts have had clear developments in both content and form.
Artists have demonstrated a sense of social responsibility and creative aspirations, contributing to spreading cultural values and building a dynamic, humane and affectionate city.
In the coming period, the Department will continue to coordinate with art associations and units to build a mechanism to encourage creation, promote and develop new cultural spaces suitable for modern life.
According to statistics from the Department of Culture and Sports of Ho Chi Minh City, in the period of 2020-2025, art units organized more than 2,500 performances, dozens of exhibitions, creative camps and large and small art programs to serve the public.
This is a clear demonstration of the right attention and investment of the City Party Committee and Government in the field of literature and arts.
These achievements also show that the City's literature and arts have been promoting their role in accompanying the development of society, contributing to the enrichment of spiritual life, orienting aesthetic values and arousing creative aspirations in the people.
Entering the 2025-2030 term, artists expect Ho Chi Minh City to continue to focus on building an open creative environment, increasing investment in cultural institutions, supporting artists to create, promote and disseminate works of high ideological and artistic value.
Along with that, promote the application of technology in performance, publishing and international exchange, so that the City's literature and art is not only the voice of emotions, but also the power to spread the identity and pride of the people of the city named after Uncle Ho./.
