Linking to improve the value chain
In remote communes of An Giang, such as Vinh Hoa, U Minh Thuong, Vinh Thuan, Vinh Binh... during their operations, many cooperatives have found new directions to adapt to the market mechanism, diversify services; apply high technology to agricultural production according to VietGAP standards; carry out production linkages with enterprises... helping members increase their income and stabilize their lives.

Members of the CL Farm Agricultural Production, Trade and Service Cooperative in Vinh Hoa Commune are excited about the winter-spring crop of rice sowing using drones. Mr. Quach Hoang Giang, a member of the cooperative, said: “With the machine doing everything, rice planting is very easy. I have more than 5 hectares of rice fields. Previously, I had to hire people to sow rice for 3-4 days, but now the drone can do it in the morning.”
According to Mr. Giang, by joining the cooperative, farmers have many benefits, such as being provided with fertilizers and seeds at preferential prices and quality, so input production costs are lower, and being consulted by technical staff, so rice productivity is high, nearly 1 ton/hectare...
At the Lo Ren Clean Rice Supply and Production Service Cooperative in Vinh Thuan Commune, people also planted the winter-spring crop about 20 days ago, and the rice grew well. According to the Director of the Lo Ren Clean Rice Supply and Production Service Cooperative, Nguyen Van Truong, the Cooperative has 400 hectares with over 150 members. In addition to providing agricultural services at preferential prices, the Cooperative also supports people in applying science and technology to production according to the clean rice process.
The cooperative cooperates with 2 companies and 3 businesses to purchase rice for members, commits to a price higher than the market and pays immediately after harvesting the rice, ensuring members profit of 60-70% per hectare, equivalent to about 3.5 million VND.
At Kenh 10 Agricultural Production - Service Cooperative, U Minh Thuong commune, in addition to prioritizing support for members in agricultural production, the Cooperative also develops handicraft products from banana silk, promoting the export of banana silk materials to the international market.
According to Ms. Tran Thi Vy - Director of Kenh 10 Agricultural Production and Service Cooperative, about 100kg of fresh banana stems produce about 8kg of banana silk. With the price of 130,000 VND/kg, the Cooperative has a profit of nearly 300 million VND/year.
Support for sustainable development of collective economy
In recent times, the local government has paid attention to creating favorable conditions for cooperatives to develop, associated with the implementation of large-scale field models, forming high-quality rice material areas; supporting training and fostering for workers; transferring technology; investing in infrastructure...
According to Chairman of the Board of Directors of CL Farm Agricultural Production, Trade and Service Cooperative Le Thanh Hong, the cooperative has two stores supplying materials with many incentives; at the same time, it introduces traders to purchase output of rice and fruit trees at market prices to help farmers increase profits.

However, cooperatives admit that during their operations, cooperatives still face many difficulties, especially in accessing loans. “If they can access loans, both cooperatives and people will benefit greatly when they have enough capital to buy materials at a much cheaper price in advance than in later payment, resulting in lower input costs and increased profits for members,” said Mr. Hong.
“Last season, I bought fertilizer and paid later, so each bag was a difference of hundreds of thousands of dong, and the price of pesticides was a few tens of thousands of dong depending on the type. In addition, the issue of linking rice purchases needs to be tighter, binding the responsibility of both traders and farmers to comply with the contract,” said Mr. Giang.
According to leaders of some localities in the U Minh Thuong region, recently, localities have paid attention to and supported the development of collective economy; including directing the consolidation and improvement of the activities of cooperatives and cooperative groups in the area...
Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Vinh Hoa Commune Nguyen Van Ut Thuong said: "The commune has 9 cooperatives and 35 cooperative groups. In the coming time, the commune will focus on developing the collective economy in a more sustainable, dynamic and effective direction on the basis of respecting the nature, values and principles of the collective economy; continuing to consolidate, expand and develop the collective economy in sectors and fields, in which the cooperative form is the core".
Chairman of the People's Committee of Vinh Thuan Commune, Huynh Ngoc Nguyen, affirmed that the commune always considers innovation and improving the efficiency of collective economy as an important task, so it regularly surveys, listens to, and resolves difficulties and problems of cooperatives and cooperative groups...
“In the coming time, the commune will continue to support cooperatives and cooperative groups to develop; invest in building infrastructure to serve agriculture and rural areas; promote the application of scientific and technological advances; seek and introduce capable and reputable businesses to sell products to people,” said Mr. Nguyen.
