The first time the President of the United Nations General Assembly visited Vietnam

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Pham Thu Hang said on the afternoon of July 18 that President of the 78th United Nations General Assembly Dennis Francis will visit Vietnam from July 21 to 23. The visit takes place at the invitation of Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son. This is the first time a President of the United Nations General Assembly has visited Vietnam. The spokesperson said the visit takes place in the context of the Vietnam-United Nations relationship continuing to develop positively after nearly 50 years, becoming increasingly deeper and more effective.

Vietnam is a proactive and active member state, making substantial and extensive contributions to the common activities of the United Nations in peacekeeping , security and development cooperation. Vietnam has also successfully undertaken many important responsibilities at the United Nations, including two terms as a non-permanent member of the Security Council and is currently a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council. This visit by the President of the United Nations General Assembly will contribute to promoting the cooperation between the two sides to continue to go deeper and more effective. At the same time, the visit affirms Vietnam's strong commitment to multilateralism, the activities and major priorities of the United Nations and the international community, as well as affirming Vietnam's role as a responsible member of multilateral mechanisms, thereby contributing to international cooperation and solidarity. It is expected that President of the United Nations General Assembly Dennis Francis will hold talks with Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son, meet with senior leaders and a number of other activities. During a meeting with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh in September 2023, President of the United Nations General Assembly Dennis Francis highly appreciated the United Nations-Vietnam relationship, saying that he was very impressed with Vietnam's socio-economic development achievements, and highly appreciated Vietnam's active, dynamic role and increasing position. Mr. Dennis Francis said that Vietnam has many achievements in helping people escape poverty and develop the country, which can be shared with the world, and together promote cooperation in implementing the SDGs, responding to climate change, and food security. The President of the General Assembly agreed to cooperate with Vietnam to promote compliance with the United Nations Charter, international law and multilateralism.

Regarding Vietnam's foreign affairs activities, the spokesperson announced that Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son will attend the 57th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting and related meetings in Laos from July 24 to 27. This is the most important series of meetings of the year for ASEAN Foreign Ministers, aiming to assess the situation of cooperation within ASEAN, ASEAN relations with partners and preparations for the series of ASEAN summits in October. Foreign Ministers will discuss ASEAN's priorities in 2024, the process of building the ASEAN Community, ASEAN's foreign relations and international issues of mutual concern. According to the program, Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son and foreign ministers of ASEAN and partner countries will attend about 20 activities, including plenary sessions and retreat sessions of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting. Within the framework of the conference, the Vietnamese Foreign Minister will have meetings and contacts with partners. With Vietnam as the coordinator of ASEAN - Korea, Minister Bui Thanh Son will also co-chair the ASEAN - Korea Conference with the Korean Foreign Minister.
