Vietnam is ready to work with the US to remove seafood obstacles.
At the regular press conference of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs , answering the question about Vietnam's reaction to the US's refusal to recognize the equivalent of 12 Vietnamese seafood exploitation occupations under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, seafood exploited under these fishing occupations will be stopped from being imported into the US from January 1, 2026, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pham Thu Hang affirmed that Vietnam is ready to discuss and work with the US side to remove existing obstacles and continue to promote fair and sustainable bilateral trade cooperation.
On September 15, the Vietnamese Minister of Industry and Trade sent a letter to the US Secretary of Commerce requesting the US Department of Commerce and the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to reconsider the decision to avoid serious disruptions to bilateral trade and protect the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese fishermen and workers. In recent times, under the direction of the Government and with the support of localities, the Vietnamese seafood industry has made efforts to modernize, improve responsibility and strengthen fisheries management.
In the coming time, on the basis of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and the US, Vietnam is willing to discuss and work with the US side to resolve existing obstacles and continue to promote fair and sustainable bilateral trade cooperation, ensuring the legitimate interests of fishermen and businesses of the two countries.
