Lao Cai quickly restores key roads after natural disasters

The circulation of two consecutive storms (10,11) has left heavy damage to the transport infrastructure in the province. In this situation, Lao Cai is making constant efforts, racing against time to clear the route, ensuring safety for people and vehicles.

Heavy damage, traffic paralyzed

The circulation of storms No. 10 and 11 hit consecutively when the ground was saturated with water, causing serious consequences. According to statistics, the total damage to traffic infrastructure in the whole province is estimated at more than 51.7 billion VND, of which landslides are still the most difficult "problem", with more than 351,000 m³ of positive slope soil and rock, nearly 2,000 meters of road collapsed and damaged due to negative slope landslides; nearly 15,000 m² of road surface peeled and damaged.

Many national highways and provincial roads were cut off, seriously affecting people's lives.

Typically, the circulation of storm No. 10 caused serious landslides, completely destroying the roadbed at Km 269+750, National Highway 32 (Tu Le commune), paralyzing this route.

Next, the circulation of storm No. 11 continued to cause a terrible landslide at 9:00 a.m. on October 7, about 15,000 m³ of rock and soil from the positive slope on National Highway 70 (Nam Chu village, Phong Hai commune) suddenly slid down, burying 3 houses.

Many other routes such as National Highway 4D, provincial roads 162, 153, 175B also had a series of landslides and flooding, causing traffic jams for many hours.

In addition, a series of auxiliary works were also destroyed, 733 meters of guardrails were damaged, 646 meters of drainage ditches were buried, and 423 trees were broken and obstructed traffic.

Take decisive action, race against time

Immediately after the disaster, the Department of Construction urgently directed road management and maintenance units to deploy urgent solutions. With the motto "where the water recedes, there will be a solution", hundreds of workers along with excavators and bulldozers were mobilized to the landslide hotspots.

At the landslide site on Highway 70, the authorities coordinated with the Road Maintenance Board and Road Management Company 242 to urgently clear the dirt and rocks. By late afternoon of the same day, the road was temporarily reopened to traffic.

Construction forces worked through the night to quickly restore traffic at Km269+750, National Highway 32.

Comrade Tran Huy Tuan - Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, after inspecting the actual situation, directly directed the Department of Construction to research and survey the plan for a solid embankment along a road section of about 100 m long to ensure long-term safety.

In particular, at the landslide point that completely lost the roadbed at Km269+750, National Highway 32, the construction unit focused on urgent handling.

The immediate solution is to drop in the stone dragon steel cages, combined with pouring concrete and installing D200 sewer pipes to rebuild the road surface. With tireless efforts, by 9 p.m. on October 2, the road was temporarily opened to motorbikes and by the afternoon of October 3, it was opened to cars.

Warmth of human affection in flood areas

Not only is there a strong participation of functional units, the work of overcoming the consequences of natural disasters also receives the cooperation and contribution of local authorities and people, especially on rural traffic routes.

The government and people of Son Luong commune joined hands to build temporary bridges and fix landslides on inter-village roads.

In Son Luong commune, heavy rains and floods damaged the road through Can Tao waterfall area, where a spillway is under construction, making it difficult for people, especially students, to travel to school. In such an urgent situation, the spirit of “mutual love” of the community was strongly promoted.

The image of people carrying bamboo together, some hammering stakes, others laying planks really warmed people's hearts, demonstrating the power of solidarity in times of trouble.

To ensure the safety of people and vehicles, especially students, we mobilized more than 100 villagers to voluntarily contribute their efforts to build a temporary bamboo bridge. After less than 4 hours, the 15m long, 2m wide bridge was completed, making travel for people in the Nga Hai area, Vang Ngan village much more convenient and safe."

Towards sustainable solutions, not being subjective in the face of natural disasters

The severe damage caused by the circulation of two consecutive storms is a warning about the fierceness and unpredictability of natural disasters. In addition to temporary solutions, the implementation of solid and sustainable prevention works as directed by the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee is extremely urgent.

Authorities and local authorities need to continue to review vulnerable areas with high risk of landslides to have effective response plans. At the same time, people need to strictly follow the instructions of the authorities, not move through dangerous areas to ensure the safety of life and property, and join hands with the authorities to overcome this difficult period.
