Floods pass, water remains

Floods damaged many pumping stations in communes in the old Huu Lung district.

In mid-October 2025, we were at Dong Heo pumping station, Huu Lung commune. At this time, the water had completely receded from the pumping station, but mud still covered almost 2 floors of the machinery building. Below the first floor, a thick layer of mud still clung to the floor. Fortunately, as soon as the water rose, the management unit coordinated with other forces to transport some equipment to a higher position.

Mr. Linh Van Quynh, Dong Heo village, Huu Lung commune (a person directly involved in operating the pumping station) said: When the water rose, the management unit and 20 people from the forces quickly moved to the area where the engine and electrical cabinet were located to dismantle. However, due to the rapid and high water level, 3 engines were submerged, 1 primer, 1 electric pole was knocked down, and 20 meters of fence were collapsed. The pumping station was submerged in floodwater and still cannot operate.

Not only Dong Heo pumping station, flooding has damaged many other pumping stations and irrigation works in the communes of the old Huu Lung district, mainly works under the management of Huu Lung Irrigation Works Exploitation Enterprise.

Mr. Nguyen Van Hung, Director of Huu Lung Irrigation Works Exploitation Enterprise, said: Currently, the unit is managing 35 electric pumping stations to irrigate 700 hectares of winter crops and over 900 hectares of spring crops. Due to the impact of storm No. 11, the enterprise has 34/35 pumping stations flooded. In addition to the damaged pumping stations, the unit also suffered damage to a number of canals, other machinery... with a total loss of nearly 2.6 billion VND.

The floods have submerged many people's properties, in which most of the agricultural production area was severely damaged. The water receded, which is also the time when people started to overcome the damage and restore production. However, with the current state of damaged pumping stations in the communes of the old Huu Lung district, the risk of water shortage for irrigation production (first of all, this year's winter crop) is present.

Faced with that reality, the relevant units are currently implementing solutions to overcome the situation. Mr. Nguyen Van Hung, Director of Huu Lung Irrigation Works Exploitation Enterprise, said: After the water receded, the enterprise cleaned and repaired equipment at the office to temporarily make initial repairs. For pumping stations, the unit is cleaning up mud and dirt; for 11/35 pumping stations that did not have flooded electrical cabinets, the unit is drying the motors, maintaining and reinstalling the equipment to soon resume operation. However, for 24/35 pumping stations with flooded electrical cabinets as well as damaged works and other items requiring large repair costs, the unit does not have enough resources to do so.

Mr. Lieu Van Thong, Deputy General Director of Lang Son Irrigation Works Exploitation One Member Co., Ltd., said: As soon as the damage to irrigation works in the old Huu Lung district was detected, especially the damage at the pumping stations, the company directed the Huu Lung Irrigation Works Exploitation Enterprise to implement temporary remedial measures. For repair and replacement items requiring large investment resources, the company has submitted a request for financial support to the competent authority. Thereby, resources will soon be available to overcome the damage, ensure the safety of irrigation works as well as restore irrigation water supply, serving agricultural production for the people.

According to the leader of the Huu Lung Irrigation Works Exploitation Enterprise, around November every year, people in the communes of the old Huu Lung district start winter crop production. This year, due to the impact of natural disasters, many areas of crops were damaged, so people can start earlier. Therefore, to ensure irrigation water for agricultural production for people, we hope that relevant levels and sectors will soon have solutions to support resources to overcome the problems of irrigation works. From there, it will help people to restore production in time and stabilize their lives soon.
