Nowadays, thanks to the development of society, people have been able to live a more fulfilling life. Whether it is hot summer or cold winter, we can bathe comfortably. This is also a way for people to maintain hygiene in modern times.

However, few people know that people in ancient feudal times, especially women, only bathed once a year. Historians based on ancient documents have conducted a study on this issue. They concluded that the ancients were not lazy, but behind the infrequent bathing of ancient women there was another reason. What was that?

During the Qin Dynasty, women often had the habit of washing their hair every 3 days and bathing once every 5 days. During the Han Dynasty, women used to bathe every 5 days. By the end of the Tang Dynasty, they switched to bathing every 10 days. After that, they changed their habit to bathing once a year.

If a man in the feudal era felt hot, he would just find a river or stream to bathe in, but women could not do the same. They rarely chose rivers or streams, but had to carry water home before bathing to maintain etiquette. For women living in wealthy families, it was easier, they did not have to carry water themselves, even bathing was served by maids.

However, in the cold winter, bathing becomes much more difficult. In the feudal era, everything was still quite backward, the ancients did not have fireplaces, the houses were mainly made of wood or straw, making them cold every winter.

At this time, bathing would become a “torture” because the weather was too cold. Moreover, bathing in the cold easily made people sick. Therefore, bathing for women at that time became more difficult.

In addition, the time between winter and summer was relatively long, so they only bathed once a year. It was not until later, when public baths were exploited and put into operation, that women's bathing and hygiene work was improved. Through this, it can be seen that the life of ancient people was really too deprived.
