Speaking to the press, Prime Minister Anwar said that Malaysia is working closely with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on expanding BRICS membership. The Southeast Asian country is currently awaiting the final results and response from the South African government on this matter.

In 2006, Brazil, Russia, India, and China formed the BRIC group. Since then, the bloc has undergone two phases of expansion.

In 2011, South Africa joined, thereby changing the group's name from BRIC to BRICS.

In August 2023, the group extended the invitation to six new members, including Argentina. However, Argentina reversed the decision in late December 2023.

Earlier this year, five new members, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), officially became members of BRICS.

Currently, Russia's rotating BRICS presidency for 2024 (from January 1 this year) has the theme "Strengthening multilateralism for equitable global security and development".
