Medvedev, Tsitsipas easily advance at Indian Wells

(Dan Tri) - Daniil Medvedev easily advanced after Alex Michelsen retired after only 10 minutes of play. Stefanos Tsitsipas continued his rise by defeating Matteo Berrettini in two sets.

In a surprise move at Indian Wells, Daniil Medvedev advanced to the fourth round after opponent Alex Michelsen was forced to retire after just 10 minutes of play due to illness. The match took place in the early hours of March 10, and this was the first time the two players had met. Medvedev also had to stop to treat a nosebleed in the second game, but when the match resumed at 0-2, Michelsen announced the retirement.

Fifth seed Medvedev got off to a flying start at the first Masters 1000 event of the year by beating Buyunchaokete on Saturday, marking his 200th hard-court win since 2020. The 29-year-old Russian is 10-5 this season and needs just one more win to reach his fourth consecutive ATP Tour quarter-final.

"I played well in the first round, so I'm looking forward to playing Michelsen. I don't watch Michelsen much, but I like the way he plays and I think it could be an interesting match. Unfortunately he got food poisoning or something like that, which happens a lot," Medvedev said.

Medvedev admitted that playing at Indian Wells is always not easy. "It's not easy to play here, the conditions are always tough. Before the tournament, I started to lose my rhythm, but I got it back after the first match. I started to feel better and better here," the Russian added.

Medvedev will face 10th seed Tommy Paul in the fourth round, who beat 2021 champion Cameron Norrie 6-3, 7-5. The win took Paul to 50 ATP Masters 1000 wins, joining Taylor Fritz as the only active American to achieve this feat.

Stefanos Tsitsipas extended his winning streak to seven matches with a 6-3, 6-3 third-round win over Matteo Berrettini at Indian Wells. The No. 8 seed put in a stellar performance, taking advantage of slower ball conditions to beat Berrettini in back-to-back weeks. Tsitsipas overcame the Italian in the Dubai quarterfinals en route to last week's title and improved to 5-1 in their head-to-head series.

"I have to focus on my serve, that's the priority," said Tsitsipas, who won 92% (22/24) of his first-serve points, according to Infosys ATP Stats. "I'm thinking about how I'm going to hold serve, how I'm going to put pressure on my opponent. There's an advantage to holding serve, it's easier, you have more time to focus on the return," Tsitsipas added.
