Monash University (Australia) has introduced for the first time a full scholarship program worth 2.5 million AUD ~ 42.6 billion VND, a comprehensive financial support package for students from Southeast Asia studying at the school's facilities.

The Vice-Chancellor's ASEAN Awards were launched by Monash at the Australia-ASEAN Business Forum 2025 in Adelaide, Australia on 26 August 2025. The program will provide financial support to outstanding undergraduate students from Southeast Asia to study at Monash from Semester 1, 2026.

The program is aimed at completely reducing the burden of study costs for international students, including tuition fees, travel, accommodation, visa fees and other services, opening up opportunities for undergraduate students from 10 ASEAN member countries.

According to Professor Sharon Pickering, President and Vice-Chancellor of Monash University, this program clearly demonstrates Monash's commitment to providing world-class education while strengthening strong relationships in the region. "Southeast Asia is a vibrant region with rapid development, diversity and an abundance of talent. Monash is committed to accompanying the next generation of leaders and change-makers from ASEAN countries, and contributing to building a more open and collaborative future for the entire region," Professor Sharon Pickering shared.

“Since 1961, Monash has been a study destination for ASEAN students, who have shaped the University. Today, Monash is an international university deeply engaged with ASEAN. This program continues to affirm that deep connection – through our student community, alumni, research and collaborative projects – and our commitment to delivering transformative education and research to the region. Monash is now the Australian university with the largest ASEAN student population, with more than 16,000, of whom 7,700 are in Victoria. Combined with a network of almost 60,000 alumni, including leaders in government, business and the community, Monash has affirmed its central role in creating sustainable soft power in the region,” said Professor Sharon Pickering.

Australian Assistant Minister for Education, Hon Julian Hill MP, affirmed that this new program has once again highlighted the pivotal role of international education in shaping the future of the Indo- Pacific region.

“International education not only enriches the knowledge economy and cultural life of countries in the region, but is also a foundation for promoting cooperation and sustainable development. Australia is proud to play a pioneering role in this global exchange. Scholarship programs such as the Vice-Chancellor's ASEAN Awards are a clear demonstration of the pioneering role of leading universities such as Monash in creating opportunities for outstanding students, while promoting innovation, enhancing cooperation and fostering mutual understanding across the region,” Mr. Hill emphasized.

Eligible students will be selected through a competitive process with country-specific quotas to ensure broad representation across the region. Undergraduate students from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam are eligible to apply.

Monash University has a strong presence in Southeast Asia, with campuses in Malaysia and Indonesia and offices in China and India. Monash’s alumni network and research activities in ASEAN are also expanding. As a pioneer, Monash is at the forefront of promoting educational exchanges, international collaboration and student recruitment across the Indo-Pacific region.

The establishment of the Monash Vice-Chancellor’s ASEAN Awards is an important addition to Monash University’s comprehensive engagement strategy with the region and reflects the strategic priorities of the Australian Government and the ASEAN community. Professor Pickering, who sits on the Advisory Board of the first ASEAN-Australia Centre, to be established by the Australian Government in 2024, continues to play a leading role in promoting deep regional cooperation and engagement.
