Water level of Bac Hung Hai irrigation system in Hai Duong is low

An Tho sluice (Tu Ky) was opened from December 19-23 to serve the drainage of water in the entire Bac Hung Hai irrigation system.

On the morning of December 22, the average water level in the above canals was only about +0.5 m. Some sections of these canals were so dry that the bottom could be seen.

According to Hai Duong Newspaper reporters, since December 19, Bac Hung Hai Irrigation Works Exploitation Company Limited has been draining water on canals in the entire system. This is an annual task to create conditions for localities to do winter-spring irrigation, preparing to flood to serve the planting of winter-spring rice and vegetables.

Water in many inland areas has dried up after the main canals of the Bac Hung Hai irrigation system were drained to serve winter-spring irrigation.

The company has closed Xuan Quan sluice gate and opened Cau Xe and An Tho sluice gates (Tu Ky) to drain the sluice gate. Before draining the sluice gate, the unit coordinated with the Provincial Irrigation Works Exploitation One Member Co., Ltd. to notify the district-level irrigation works exploitation enterprises to proactively plan for regulating water in the fields so as not to interrupt the process of caring for winter vegetables of farmers.

From December 23, the unit will stop draining and prepare to store water in the entire system after the hydroelectric reservoirs release water.

According to the announcement of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development , the Northern Delta region has a total of 12 days to get water for the 2024-2025 winter-spring rice crop. Phase 1 from 0:00 on January 12 to 24:00 on January 16, 2025 (5 days), phase 2 from 0:00 on February 8 to 24:00 on February 14, 2025 (7 days).

It is expected that after December 26, the Bac Hung Hai system will take buffer water and store maximum water into the system.

Hai Duong has 6 out of 12 districts, towns and cities with agricultural land area dependent on water sources of Bac Hung Hai irrigation system. Of these, 3 districts Binh Giang, Gia Loc and Thanh Mien are completely dependent; 3 districts Ninh Giang, Tu Ky and Cam Giang are partially dependent.
