Speaking to reporters before departing for Iowa, President Trump acknowledged the complexity of negotiating tariffs with more than 170 countries, saying letters would begin being sent to 10 countries each day at the same time, with potential tariffs of 20%, 25% and 30%.
"I'm more inclined to send a letter and say what tariffs they're going to pay. It's just a lot easier," he pointed out. "We have more than 170 countries, and how many deals can you make? And you can make good deals, but they're a lot more complicated."
President Trump's announcement came ahead of a July 9 White House-imposed deadline to negotiate trade deals with other countries after he halted reciprocal tariffs on dozens of other nations.
The pause is intended to allow for negotiations, and White House officials have for weeks touted progress in talks with various countries.
The US has reached an agreement with the UK, and also agreed on a framework for a deal with China./.
