The US Justice Department announced on November 8 that it had charged an Iranian man in connection with a plot to assassinate President-elect Donald Trump ordered by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), but was foiled.

According to the statement, the subject Farhad Shakeri confessed to US law enforcement that on October 7, 2024, he was assigned to plan the assassination of Mr. Donald Trump.

The plot is believed to have been directed by the IRGC to avenge the death of General Qassem Soleimani - commander of the IRGC's elite Quds Force who was killed in a US attack in Iraq in 2020 ordered by Mr. Trump during his first term as President.

The US Justice Department described Shakeri as a member of the IRGC residing in Tehran. The statement said he immigrated to the US as a child and was deported around 2008 on robbery charges.

In addition, the US Department of Justice also charged two other individuals in connection with the plot to murder an Iranian-American citizen in New York.

Meanwhile, Iran's Foreign Ministry on November 9 described the US accusation that Tehran plotted to assassinate President-elect Donald Trump as "completely baseless".

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei stressed that the agency “rejects allegations that Iran was involved in an assassination targeting US officials or former officials”.
