The 2nd Thanh Nien Open 3-Cushion Billiards Tournament - Viet Value Cup 2023, organized by the Thanh Nien Newspaper Journalists Association in coordination with the Ho Chi Minh City Journalists Association, kicked off on the afternoon of June 23 at Nguyen Du Gymnasium (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City).

On the first day of competition, 48 players competed in the qualifying and play-off rounds to find 32 names to advance to the round of 32. Although she was quite tired, this 1998-born player still decided to compete immediately and lost on penalties in the first match because she was not in the best mood. However, when entering the 2 play-off matches, Lien Quynh excellently defeated 2 opponents to enter the round for the 32 strongest players. "Although the distance was far, I still tried to run back to HCMC to participate and was determined not to give up," Lien Quynh confided.

Although not in the best physical condition yet, Lien Quynh was still determined to play 3 matches and excellently won the right to enter the round of 32.

Commenting on the tournament, the female player born in 1998 said: "When participating, I found that the scale of the tournament was not amateur at all, from the competition space to the referee team... and the way everyone performed was also very good. With this new competition format, I see that the chance of winning is divided equally among all athletes and there will be surprises, the important thing is how confident and brave they are. Especially, when entering the penalty shootout, it is very dramatic and really interesting. I hope this tournament will develop further in the following years."

Meanwhile, Nguyen Hoang Yen Nhi also flew from Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh City and stayed for a few days to participate in the Thanh Nien Open 3-cushion billiards tournament 2023. With the mettle of a professional player who won the silver medal at the 2023 SEA Games and the national champion in the 3-cushion carom event, the girl from the Central region had an impressive performance with a strong playing style, making the "bearded" men present at the competition place admire. In the first round, she won a dramatic victory over a very strong male player to win a ticket to the round of 32.

After the impressive victory in the opening match, female player Yen Nhi shared: "This is not a professional tournament but there are referees and separate competition areas so it still creates excitement for the athletes. Besides, the level of male players, most of whom are reporters, is also very good, often scoring high scores in series, while professional female players like me have not been able to do so yet."

Talking about the motivation to fly from Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh City to participate in the tournament, the 2023 SEA Games silver medalist in the 3-cushion carom event confided: "This is an opportunity for me to meet reporters and journalists. Before that, although I had worked with many reporters, I had never met them. I am who I am today thanks to the reporters who have supported me a lot with images, information... That's why I want to meet and thank the reporters on the occasion of the 98th anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day."

With very solid shots, Yen Nhi is considered a candidate for the championship.

Today (June 24), the 2023 Thanh Nien Open Billiards Tournament officially opened at Nguyen Du Gymnasium. Athletes will compete in the round of 32, round of 16, quarterfinals, semi-finals and finals.
