Nguyen Xuan Son wants to help Vietnam team attend World Cup 2030

Responding to ESPN Brazil, naturalized striker Nguyen Xuan Son expressed his desire to take the Vietnamese team to the 2030 World Cup to respond to the love of Vietnamese fans.

"Our biggest goal is to qualify for the 2030 World Cup finals," Nguyen Xuan Son told ESPN Brazil while on vacation back home in August.

ESPN Brazil said: "The fact that Xuan Son's contract was extended by Nam Dinh Club until 2031 is a guarantee for his dream of crossing the ocean from the Maranhao region (Xuan Son's hometown)."

"Vietnamese people welcome me. They always thank me for what I have done for the country. I am happy here. Sometimes I feel like I was born here. Vietnam will forever be in my heart," Xuan Son shared.

Nguyen Xuan Son also recounted his miraculous journey, from a normal football-loving boy to a hero of a country. Son said that winning the ASEAN Cup 2024, even though he could only celebrate in the hospital, was a beautiful memory that he could not have imagined even in his dreams.

"When I first came to Vietnam, I was a bit worried. This is a country where football is not very developed.

The pitch was terrible, the logistics were very complicated. At first, I thought I wouldn't stay long," he recalled.

"But I have adapted to continue the adventure here. Vietnam does not need to adapt to foreigners, but the opposite. We have to adapt to Vietnam," said the striker born in 1997.

Xuan Son is in the final stages of his recovery from injury, eight months after tibial bone surgery. He is trying to return to the Vietnamese national team early next year, when coach Kim Sang Sik's team plays the final matches of the third qualifying round of the 2027 Asian Cup.
