UK retailer loses £206m due to cyber attack
The incident cost Co-op £206m in lost revenue and £80m in profit in the first half of its financial year. The business recorded a pre-tax loss of £50m, compared to a profit of £58m in the same period in 2024.
Headquartered in Manchester and employing 54,000 people, Co-op owns 2,300 grocery stores and more than 800 funeral homes. The group was forced to shut down some of its IT systems in April after discovering they had been hacked. The attack left Co-op stores facing stock shortages while funeral homes had to provide some services on paper because they could not access digital services.
Although the attack occurred in April, Co-op only revealed in July that all 6.5 million members of its system had their data stolen, including names, addresses and contact information. However, no financial information such as credit card details, debit card details or transaction data was stolen.
The Co-op attack comes just days after a cyber-security incident at Marks & Spencer (M&S) forced the retailer to shut down its IT systems for weeks, costing hundreds of millions of pounds. M&S also admitted that personal information relating to thousands of customers, including names, addresses, dates of birth and order history, had been stolen.
Earlier this year, luxury department store Harrods was forced to shut down some of its IT systems after being hit by a cyber attack.
