Warm, loving meals in a storm shelter.
In the past few days, due to the impact of storm No. 5, most localities in the province have been covered in heavy rain, the fields are flooded. People are worried and anxious, local authorities and functional forces are also busy. That is why the meal of people taking shelter from the storm in Loc Ha village, Nhi Son commune today, although simple and modest with just a few plates of boiled vegetables, a few braised fish... is warmer than ever.
Quickly scooping rice to share with each person, Ms. Thao Thi Dua - who came here to take shelter from the storm confided: "During the rainy and stormy season, many villages in the commune are often flooded and landslides cause isolation. Therefore, before the impact of storm No. 5, my family as well as many people in the village were quickly supported by the local government as well as the functional forces in the commune to evacuate to the village's cultural house to take shelter from the storm. In recent days, heavy rain and strong winds have made us feel insecure and worried about our homes and fields. However, staying at the community cultural house to take shelter from the storm, receiving the attention and care from the local government for meals and sleep has partly helped vulnerable people like us to overcome difficulties with peace of mind.
Because of that warm feeling, every year when the storm season passes and we move to the cultural house to avoid the storm, each of us misses the warm, cozy meals together, or the thoughtful and caring gestures from the local government and functional forces. That feeling is very precious and warm" - Ms. Dua confided.
Just returning from the storm prevention to the cultural house, looking thoughtfully at the children sleeping peacefully in the cultural house, the head of Loc Ha Gia Po Nai village could not help but feel sad: “During the rainy and stormy season, Loc Ha village is always at high risk of landslides and flooding, so when storm No. 5 was about to make landfall, we quickly propagated and mobilized the villagers to go to the village cultural house and the kindergarten in Loc Ha area to take shelter safely. In the concentrated storm shelter areas, the local authorities have carefully prepared household items, clean and spacious sanitation so that the villagers can take shelter with peace of mind.”
The damage from storm No. 3 had not yet subsided when floods returned, and people in mountainous communes had to face inundation and landslides. In the context of natural disasters following natural disasters, the solidarity between people became even warmer. At the cultural house of Chieng Ai village, Ba Thuoc commune, since it became a temporary shelter for households in the village living in vulnerable areas, although there were not enough necessary items - just pieces of mats or makeshift tables to rest on - people still felt secure.
Among the households mobilized by the Ba Thuoc commune government to evacuate to the Chieng Ai village cultural house, there were 5 members of Mr. Truong Van Thuy's family. For Mr. Thuy, this was a memorable and unforgettable "storm escape". Because the evacuation took place quickly, with enthusiastic support from the government and officials. Mr. Thuy confided: "Our house was built on the hillside, in an area at risk of landslides. After being informed and explained by the officials, for safety, we went to the storm shelter arranged by the commune at the Chieng Ai village cultural house. Hearing the radio report of a big storm and prolonged heavy rain, we were very worried. We did not know if our house and property at home were safe or not."
During the night of August 24, at the village cultural house, most of them were elderly people, women, children and households living in vulnerable areas. The difficult life and the worries during the stormy days brought them closer together. Ms. Dao Thi Thao, an officer of the Economic Department, People's Committee of Ba Thuoc commune, said: "The temporary shelters were provided with rice, fish sauce, salt and basic necessities by the commune. People shared and gave in to each other with a high spirit of mutual support and consensus. They shared their family stories, hardships and difficulties in life and encouraged each other to try and agree with the government to ensure safety during the storm."
People evacuated from vulnerable areas to storm shelters - each person carries a mixed feeling of joy and sadness, happy because they were brought to a safe place, sad because their property and houses are still there, facing the turmoil of nature. Forecasts in the coming time will still have many unstable weather conditions, with difficult terrain, Ba Thuoc commune still has many dangers of landslides and floods, so temporary shelters and storm shelters must still be maintained to protect the people. That is not only the task of the government and functional forces but also the awareness of each person to comply with the policy to join hands and overcome the harsh challenges of nature.
Dien Lu Commune - one of the vulnerable points, has nearly 280 people who have been urgently evacuated to safe shelters at the village cultural houses. They came - some contributed bags of rice, some brought blankets, rice cookers... With the thoughtful care and responsibility of the functional forces, organizations and kind-hearted people, they have been helped to have a safe shelter full of humanity. The family of Mr. Cao Duc Toan in Co Luon village, Dien Lu commune has 6 members who have been brought to avoid the flood at the old cultural house of the village since the night of August 24 until now. Mr. Toan shared: “After being relocated here, we were visited and encouraged by local leaders, police and soldiers. From the facilities for daily life to the support of drinking water, rice, instant noodles and other necessities, everything was very thoughtful. We were supported by the local government and villagers to cook rice and take care of our accommodation until the flood completely passed. We were less worried about having to temporarily leave our home.”
Comrade Le Quang Huy, Secretary of the Dien Lu Commune Party Committee, said: "The locality mobilized village cultural houses and households with high-rise buildings in the villages to provide accommodation to avoid floods for local people. Due to the impact of storm No. 5, Dien Lu Commune has organized the evacuation of 72 households with 275 people to relatives' families, local households and village cultural houses. In addition to supporting the families with necessities, we also mobilized people in the commune to support working days, food and drinks for people affected by floods. Up to now, the rescue work for people in flooded areas has been safe."
During the days of natural disasters, officers and soldiers of the army and police left beautiful images in the hearts of every citizen. Right from the night of August 24, under the heavy rain, officers and soldiers of the armed forces waded through the water to evacuate people, especially the lonely elderly, children... and their property to a safe place. With all their heart and soul, the forces worked without rest, forgetting even meals...
Lieutenant Colonel Tran Trong Tai, Captain of the 2nd Squadron of the Provincial Border Guard, said: "The sea dike of Hai Binh ward was flooded in 2017, but has not been reinforced or upgraded yet. In the face of the complicated developments of storm No. 5, on the night of August 24, we evacuated people to a safe place to avoid the storm. The unit mobilized forces to support people in implementing necessary measures, such as anchoring boats, and being ready to participate in overcoming dike problems when bad situations occur... During the implementation of the mission, we also received attention and support from the people themselves to overcome the consequences of natural disasters. People donated drinking water and food to the soldiers...
Furniture was brought by people to Thieu Duong Secondary School to avoid the storm.
Looking at the furniture and belongings that the people of the old Thieu Duong ward, now Ham Rong ward, brought to the school to be stored more and more to avoid storm No. 5, with red eyes because he had stayed up with the people to guard against the storm for many nights, teacher Vu Quang, Principal of Thieu Duong Secondary School, could not help but feel sad: "The area of Thieu Duong ward (old), is always a flood "center", so when the storm comes, it is inevitable that water will flood into people's houses. That is why every year during the rainy season, there are many trucks carrying furniture, rice, pots and pans... brought to the school to be stored. If the water level rises, people will also proactively come to the school to take shelter. Therefore, to ensure safety and support people to avoid storms, the school always arranges staff and teachers to be on duty at the school 24/7".
In the rain and wind, some people carried old people through floodwaters, some held newborn babies, and there were also people silently giving up their blankets, their beds, their meals... in storm shelters.
The storm goes, the flood comes. Humanity remains – silent, responsible, resilient and full of love!
