Leisure talk: Something is waiting for me

It seems that city people forget about nature. They remember the road to school, to the market, to the hospital; they remember the faces they have to meet and interact with. But they rarely remember, during the time they walk along the wind and sunshine, what the sky and clouds were like that day and whether the trees were blooming or shedding their leaves.

The rush kept them moving forward. Work, everyone wanted to finish quickly. People wanted to go home, do this and that quickly and then lie down. Just lie down. To soothe their aching backs and tired legs.

I forget things too. I think about what I’m doing when I go shopping, think about what I need to buy when I move, think about the books I’m reading when I drive to work. My head is full of thoughts focused on the future. Sometimes, thoughts stuck in the past. I don’t really think about what I’m doing, in the present moment. I’m busy, and I use that as an excuse to pretend to forget things. Forget to water the plants, let the pretty ceramic pots I’ve painstakingly hunted languish for their withered pieces. Forget about getting a new fish, the aquarium is dusty and has dried algae stuck to the bottom. Forget about going to the zoo, going to the park. Forget about doing things for myself.

Until one day, I no longer had enough strength to drive myself home. I took a motorbike taxi, sat behind the driver and was silent. In the rare times when I had someone to drive me like this, I usually spent time thinking about unfinished business. But today, I let my mind relax, let it fly like a kite filled with wind. The kite of thoughts took off. I looked around and saw a girl sitting behind the guy, their motorbikes running parallel to mine. She was filming something, looking very happy. I just tried to look. And I was overwhelmed.

The sun was setting. The sky was a golden mass. The purple and deep blue rays blended together, enhancing the yellow. There were even spots of red that melted into pink. Before my eyes, nature painted a colorful picture. The colors kept changing. With each passing minute, the colors changed, the sky gradually darkened.

If I hadn’t raised my head, I would have missed that beautiful moment, of course. I wouldn’t even know what I missed. I would have continued to rush forward, with all my thoughts, forgetting everything around me. Forgetting the wind after the rain, soaking my skin, caressing it, making it tremble slightly. Forgetting the star apple trees on the left side of the road, ripening brown, falling down in clumps, spinning as if dancing. Forgetting the small Lagerstroemia tree at the corner of the road, as tall as a person, blooming purple as if wearing a crown.

It seems like nature is still quietly green, quietly blooming, waiting for people to see. It seems like there are things still silently waiting for us somewhere out there. We just need to look up. We just need to realize. We just need to slow down.

I dug up the soil in the pots that had withered, planning to buy new seeds. From the dry soil, when the black seeds scattered, the new sprout opened its small leaves to look at me. It had been waiting here, waiting for me to see it, waiting to drink some cool water. Strangely, I suddenly remembered, it had been a long time since I called home…

Putting aside all the messy things, which I know are okay to be a few days late, I reward myself with an early night. I will move my life in a different direction. Waking up with the dawn, I put on my shoes, I am not strong enough so I do not run, just walk. On both sides of the road, the trees greet me with the rustling sound of the wind. Someone's jasmine flowers are blooming, the scent lingering like a carefully wrapped gift waiting to be given to someone who knows how to love me. Looking up, the dawn seems to have been waiting, carrying the color of hope.
