Before going to a convenience store, a man in North Carolina (USA) had no idea that he was about to get lucky twice, when he picked up money and won the lottery.

USA Today reported on October 28 that a carpenter in Banner Elk, North Carolina, USA, found a $20 bill in a convenience store parking lot and used it to buy a scratch-off lottery ticket worth $1 million.

Jerry Hicks said he found the money outside the store and used it to buy an Extreme Cash ticket at the store, according to the North Carolina Education Lottery.

The lucky thing happened on October 22 and the man said he intended to buy a different type of lottery ticket, but the store only had the Extreme Cash type.

After winning, he said he had a lot of things he wanted to do. "We're going to go straight to the Golden Corral and eat everything they have," he laughed.

When he arrived at the company to collect his bonus on October 25, Mr. Hicks was given the choice of receiving $50,000 annually for 20 years or a lump sum of $600,000. He opted for the lump sum, which netted him $429,007 after taxes.

After winning the lottery, Mr. Hicks plans to retire after 56 years of working as a carpenter. In addition, he shared his intention to donate the money to help children.
