Japan issues tsunami warning after powerful earthquake

The epicenter of the 8:14 a.m. local time earthquake on Tuesday was in the sea near Torishima in the Izu island chain, about 10 kilometers underground. So far, there have been no reports of serious damage.

A 50cm tsunami hit Hachijo Island, one of the Izu Islands, about 40 minutes after the quake, the JMA said. The agency predicted the tsunami could reach a height of 1m and urged people to stay away from coastal areas.

The Izu Islands and the Ogasawara Islands further south have about a dozen inhabited islands and a combined population of about 24,000 as of last year, according to the Tokyo metropolitan government, which administers the area.

Japan sits on four major tectonic plates. The country experiences about 1,500 earthquakes a year, most of them small.
