Dinh Bo Linh was born on February 15, Giap Than year (924), in Dai Hoang village. Today, there are still traces of the old house where he was born, Go Bo De (still traces at the old medical station, Van Ha village, Gia Phuong commune). His father was Dinh Cong Tru, his mother was Dam Thi.
When he was young, Dinh Bo Linh herded buffaloes for his uncle Dinh Du. Dinh Bo Linh was respected as the leader (the youngest child) by the buffalo herders of his age. Linh often taught the children to pick reed flowers to make flags, and divided the troops into mock battles. The battles were fake but acted like real battles (thanks to the old servant who taught them), demonstrating Dinh Bo Linh's spirit and talent.
After each practice match, the children folded their arms to form a palanquin to carry Dinh Bo Linh like the Emperor's guards. Among the children were some from the same hometown and the same age, who became sworn brothers. They were: Dinh Bo Linh, Dinh Dien, Nguyen Bac, Luu Co, Trinh Tu, who respected Bo Linh as the eldest brother. Later, they became the backbone of the Hoa Lu warlords, the "Four Pillars of the Court" when Bo Linh ascended the throne.
After King Ngo Quyen died, the Ngo dynasty was in turmoil and powerless. A number of officials and generals rose up and declared themselves heroes, causing chaos in the country. Historical records call it the 12 Warlords' Rebellion. At that time, Dinh Bo Linh's forces were relatively strong. Due to his spirit and military talent, many people in the region followed him.
Dinh Bo Linh nurtured the will to quell the rebellion, unify the country, and establish a royal court. Knowing that his force was still small, Bo Linh brought his force to ask to join forces with warlord Tran Lam (also known as Tran Minh Cong in Bo Hai Khau - Thai Binh today). Tran Lam was a colleague and had many favors for Dinh Bo Linh's father. He happily accepted him, trusted him, and even married his daughter to him. Thanks to that, warlord Tran Lam - Dinh Bo Linh became increasingly powerful.

When he was old and weak, Tran Lam handed over all power to Dinh Bo Linh. Seeing that Bo Hai Khau was not a favorable base to raise troops and start a great career, Bo Linh brought all his generals and soldiers to build a base in Hoa Lu Cave.
Here, relying on the rugged mountains and rivers, Dinh Bo Linh strengthened the construction of citadels and ramparts, recruited heroes and soldiers, and became famous for his power in the region.
Seeing that Dinh Bo Linh's forces were growing stronger, Ngo Xuong Van and Ngo Xuong Ngap brought troops to Hoa Lu (Thung Lau Cave, Gia Hung commune today) to destroy Dinh Bo Linh but were defeated and had to withdraw.
After that, Dinh Bo Linh sometimes persuaded the other warlords to surrender, sometimes attacked and destroyed them. Dinh Bo Linh's reputation became more and more famous. In just one year, he defeated the warlords and was called Van Thang Vuong. In the year of Mau Thin (968), Van Thang Vuong ascended the throne as Emperor, with the title Dai Thang Minh Hoang De, named the country Dai Co Viet (Great Viet country) and established the capital in Hoa Lu, built a palace, and established a royal court. In 970, he named the reign Thai Binh, had Thai Binh bronze coins minted, and established five Queens. In 971, King Dinh established the ranks and titles for civil and military officials and monks.
In 972, he sent King Nam Viet Dinh Lien to pay tribute to the Song Dynasty. The Song Dynasty appointed Dai Thang Minh Hoang De as Giao Chi District King, and Dinh Lien as Tinh Hai Navy Commander of An Nam Protectorate. By February 974, King Dinh's army had 10 divisions. The King regulated the clothes and hats for civil and military officials, and established punishments to punish criminals.
In 977, the king established Hang Lang as Crown Prince, Dinh Toan as King Ve. On the night of the Mid-Autumn Festival of the year Ky Mao (September 9, 979), he and his eldest son, King Nam Viet Dinh Lien, were murdered by his servant Do Thich. Dai Thang Minh Hoang De died, and was honored by the court as Tien Hoang De, and his coffin was buried in Son Lang (Ma Yen mountain), Truong Yen, Hoa Lu. King Dinh reigned for 12 years (968-979), at the age of 56.
His temple was built at the foot of Ma Yen mountain (Truong Yen, Hoa Lu) right on the old palace grounds. The old history book's assessment of Dinh Tien Hoang wrote, "The king was talented, more intelligent than others, and the bravest in his life. He swept away all the powerful leaders and continued the great rule of Trieu Vu De. However, he did not know how to prepare and could not maintain his entire life. What a pity" "... At the time when our Viet country had no ruler, the powerful leaders were in charge, with one attack, all twelve warlords submitted, then he opened the country and established the capital, changed the title of Emperor, appointed hundreds of officials, established six districts, and had a nearly complete regime. Perhaps it was God's will for our Viet country to give birth to a Saint to continue the rule of Trieu Vuong".
Dinh Tien Hoang is a national hero, who initiated and laid the foundation for national unity, and initially built a centralized feudal state. The large inscription "Chinh thong thuy" in the Dinh King temple in Truong Yen affirms and proves that truth. "The legitimate Emperor of our Vietnam started from here. The Holy Emperors who succeeded each other in their works later all followed the lessons of the Dinh Dynasty." That is "Heaven's will to create for our Vietnam a wise Saint to continue the national tradition."
