On January 17, the Vietnam Center for Music Copyright Protection (VCPMC) held a ceremony to summarize its activities in 2024. Meritorious Artist Dinh Trung Can - General Director of VCPMC said that in 2024, the total amount of money collected from using music copyrights (excluding VAT) by VCPMC was more than 393 billion VND, an increase of 14.2% compared to 2023. The Center has made distribution and payment periods to copyright owners with an amount of nearly 257 billion VND. It is expected that the distribution amount of the 4th quarter of 2024 will be paid to authors and copyright owners in January 2025, about 94 billion VND.

Speaking to Thanh Nien , Meritorious Artist Dinh Trung Can said that many musicians receive music royalties ranging from several hundred million VND to more than 1 billion VND per year. Some musicians even receive music royalties of nearly 1 billion VND in just one quarter (3 months). However, Meritorious Artist Dinh Trung Can refused to reveal the specific identities because he did not have the permission of these musicians.

In 2024, the total amount of money collected from music copyright use by VCPMC was more than 393 billion VND.

According to Mr. Can, the activity of collecting fees for the use of music copyrights has created a positive impact on the lives of many musicians. The General Director of VCPMC gave the example of the case of musician Xuan Ba. A few years ago, musician Xuan Ba ​​reported to VCPMC that he saw his song Tinh Quan Dan appearing in the multi-episode documentary film Vietnam War but had not received any royalties. VCPMC contacted the film producer in the US because it had signed bilateral authorization agreements and cooperation contracts with many countries, including the US.

"When we contacted the film producer in the US, they were very cooperative and agreed to pay royalties to the author. After calculating the frequency of use and duplication, they paid musician Xuan Ba ​​nearly 50,000 USD (about 1 billion VND). When he received the money, musician Xuan Ba ​​was surprised and very happy. We were really happy to claim royalties for the musician. Because for musicians whose lives are difficult, receiving nearly 1 billion VND would make them very happy. And the royalties will continue, when this film is shown, the musician will still receive them," said the General Director of VCPMC.

Meritorious Artist Dinh Trung Can said that many shows and performance stages have not paid royalties for a long time.

Meritorious Artist Dinh Trung Can added that in many cases of famous musicians who have passed away, their wives and children receive royalties, which can help them in some way. "The wives and children of musicians share this money to treat illnesses, take care of their health, send their children and grandchildren to school, and pay for their death anniversaries... hearing that makes me happy," he said.
