A scene from the play "Giang Son My Nhan"
In the space of Hau Giang Cultural Center on the evening of July 27, the echoes of the success of the ancient opera "Giang Son My Nhan" were still imprinted in the hearts of the audience who admired the Huynh Long troupe and artist Binh Tinh.
"Giang Son My Nhan" by the late artist Bach Mai was recreated under the direction of People's Artist Huu Quoc and this re-performance truly created a "historic night" of the traditional opera stage thanks to the grand investment and innovation efforts of each artist.
Binh Tinh and the meaningful work of the Huynh Long family
The play "Giang Son My Nhan" is a stage script considered a precious gem in the treasure trove of classical opera scripts of the Huynh Long family - one of the cradles of classical opera art in the South. The script was written by the late artist Bach Mai, a talented and dedicated writer. The work has been revived after many years thanks to the dedication of the troupe leader - artist Binh Tinh, who is a worthy inheritor of the traditional flame from his mother.
Artist Thai Vinh as Ngo Phu Sai
This production is a rare combination of traditional and modern elements. Director People's Artist Huu Quoc has kept the typical traditional opera quality and skillfully expanded the acting layers, enhancing the characters' inner psyche to give the story a lively rhythm. The artists have exploited the characters' psychology more deeply, making each scene impressive, imbued with humanity and emotion.
With a performance duration of nearly 4 hours, the audience still stayed until the last minute, which is a testament to the attraction of the work. The play is considered the "treasure" of the Huynh Long family, and is also the play that has brought the names of many artists to shine when collaborating with Huynh Long such as: Vu Linh, Ngoc Huyen, Thanh Hang, Ngan Tuan, Chi Linh, Van Ha, Khanh Tuan, Tam Tam, Ngoc Dang...
People's Artist Huu Quoc as Ngu Tu Tu
The cast is even and brilliant
In the new version, the character of Tay Thi was given to artist Binh Tinh and artist Phuong Cam Ngoc, each with their own style and temperament. If Binh Tinh is a deep, gentle Tay Thi with a powerful, vibrato voice, Phuong Cam Ngoc brings a soft, graceful Tay Thi imbued with the qualities of a woman in troubled times.
Artist Thai Vinh in the role of Ngo Phu Sai brings the image of a crazy emperor, blinded by beauty and losing his country. Artist Bao Ngoc (Trinh Dan), Nguyen Cat Phuong (Di Quang), Artist Hoang Quoc Thanh (Viet Vuong Cau Tien), Artist To Tieu Long (Van Chung Dai Phu), Artist Hoai Nhung (A Khau), and Meritorious Artist Quynh Huong (Empress) all have a wide range of roles, with well-measured scenes, allowing them to maximize their ability to transform and the psychological depth of their characters.
Artist Ngan Tuan as Ngu Tu Tu
The role of Ngu Tu Tu, in particular, was split between People's Artist Huu Quoc and Artist Ngan Tuan. Both created a sublimation of emotions in their singing and acting style, complementing each other to create a character with many different layers of emotions, touching the audience's hearts with the steadfastness, sadness and resentment of a loyal subject.
Fan Li – the heart of tragedy
The most prominent and emotional character in the performance was Pham Lai - the character portrayed by young artist Truong Trong Nhan, a face that is creating attraction at Huynh Long stage. This shows that he has enough courage to take on such a heavy role.
Trong Nhan is not only a loyal and resourceful general with majestic demeanor on the battlefield, but also a faithful and passionate lover in a tragic relationship with A Khuong.
Artist Trong Nhan shines in the play "Giang Son My Nhan"
The farewell scene with his lover who was sent to the Wu kingdom was the most emotional scene in the play when Pham Lai, between the boundary between love and righteousness, chose to sacrifice. When the day of victory came, the sound of drums and cheers filled the stage, but Pham Lai's eyes were still filled with pain, searching for the woman he loved, because the woman he loved was no longer there. A truly beautiful tragedy was delicately expressed through Trong Nhan's singing, expression and genuine acting.
It is impossible not to mention the careful investment in sound, light, scenery, and costumes. The choreography is elaborately and gracefully staged, enhancing the visual quality without losing the soul of the traditional opera. In particular, the music from the lively orchestra to the traditional singing ensemble contributes to preserving the soul of traditional Cai Luong, as the late artist Bach Mai wished.
The play "Giang Son My Nhan" was seriously invested in and loved by the audience.
With "Giang Son My Nhan", the Huynh Long classical opera troupe has proven a truth: traditional art never becomes outdated if preserved and renewed with love for the profession.
