The incident occurred on July 27, but has only now been announced to the world press. Specifically, while Richardson and her boyfriend were at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (USA), they had an argument and then a fight broke out.
According to The Athletic , Richardson allegedly pushed Coleman multiple times, causing him to fall into a pillar. Security camera footage also shows Coleman trying to walk away, but the American athlete continued to collide with him and threw a pair of headphones at him.
Although Coleman declined to press charges and did not want to be seen as a victim, Richardson was arrested and charged with fourth-degree assault and domestic violence.
She was held at the Southern Correctional Facility in Des Moines, Washington, and released the following day.
The arrests come just days before the USATF Outdoor Track and Field Championships, a key event for qualifying athletes for the world championships.
Richardson initially competed in the 100m qualifying heats and performed well. However, she later withdrew from the 100m semi-finals and the 200m event.

However, this withdrawal does not affect Richardson's place at the 2025 World Championships in Japan, as she already has a wildcard as the reigning world champion in the 100m.
Richardson and Coleman's relationship, 29, was made public in early 2025. Richardson's career has been marked by both huge successes, including a 100m silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics and a gold medal in the women's 4x100m relay.
Notably, she was suspended from competing at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after testing positive for marijuana.
USA Track and Field (USATF) issued a brief statement saying they were aware of the incident but had no further comment. As of August 2, neither Richardson nor Coleman had made any public statements about the incident.
